Unable to detect adapter
« on: August 16, 2011, 06:18:08 AM »

We switched from a Belkin to a Netgear N600 router a few months ago.  My son's Compaq computer was able to access the internet on the Belkin, but not the Netgear router.   He tried 3 different adapters and could not get online and then gave up. Each time he had the same problem - he couldn't get the computer to detect the router.  Since then his desktop has sat in his room collecting dust.  I decided, with my daughter's help, to try and get his computer to connect to the new router.  He had a Netgear adapter which I tried first.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and followed the set up wizard.  It wouldn't detect the adapter.  The computer recognized that something was plugged into the USB port though.

I did a little research and decided to give the D-Link DWA-130 a try.  My daughter opened up the desktop and blew out all of the dust.  She removed the Belkin card which was mounted inside the computer.  As far as we can tell, there is no other software pertaining to wireless connectivity installed on the computer.

We installed the D-Link software and followed the set up wizard.  The system recognized when the D-Link adapter was plugged into the USB port and it downloaded an icon on the desktop.  It then reached a point in the set up where it didn't detect the adapter.

Please give me some ideas as to what we're doing wrong.

Thanks!

The wireless card may be loose in the socket or it may have died. It can also possibly be disabled in the BIOS, check that as well.
