DIR-655 Won't Assign IP Address To Xbox 360 Slim
« on: August 20, 2011, 01:35:02 PM »

I've been using the Dir-655 for 2 or 3 years with my old Xbox 360 and an external G wireless adapter.  Everything was working perfectly until I got the dreaded Red Rings Of Death the other day.  I replaced the Xbox with a new Slim version with built in N capable network adapter.

After more than 10 hours of trying a variety of "fixes" I found from MS and in this forum, I am still at square 1.  Arrgh!  I read the sticky Furry always refers us to.  No help I'm afraid.

Hardware Version : A3
Firmware Version : 1.32NA (this is listed as Live compatible by Microsoft)

802.11 Mode : Tried N only, G only and mixed 802.11n and 802.11g
Enable Auto Channel Scan : Checked
Transmission Rate : Best (automatic)
Channel Width : Auto 20/40
Visibility Status : Visible

Security Mode : WPA-Personal Also tried WEP
WPA Mode : Auto (WPA or WPA2)  Also tried WEP
Cipher Type : TKOP and AES

I tried assigning an IP manually from the Xbox. But, no matter what I do, the router will not accept it. It is especially frustrating that the Xbox is visible to the unit. It simply will not assign an IP to it under any circumstance.

If you read the sales hype promoting the Dir-655, you will see a lot of nonsense about it being great for gaming. Given that, you'd think a simple solution would have been found and posted for this issue by now.  Surely, end users shouldn't be trying 100 different possible "fixes", none of which work, at this late stage of the firmware upgrades. If I sound a tad fed up, it's because I am.   After the expense of the new Xbox, it appears I now have to junk my router too. >:(

They call me 'Gears'

Here is the status screen taken when it was in mixed mode.  Changing it to 'G Only' didn't make any difference:

Hi,

I use AES only for the Cipher....  I also use a reserved LAN IP for my XBOX... and I set up the same IP inside the XBox settings....

I also have set CHannels, not Auto...mine are 3 & 7 I think...  I used a wireless sniffing utility from my laptop nearby to see what channels were beingused by my neighbors...

And I have the box for UPnP checked.

Save and reboot

Thanks, Sammydad.

I downloaded a sniffer program and chose a channel that wasn't being used. It turned out to be 7 & 3 just like yours.  I have forced the IP for the Xbox in the router and tried both manual and automatic setting for it in the Xbox.  No change.

The router sees the Xbox and the Xbox sees the network. But, it simply refuses to connect.

If you are using wireless encryption, try turning it off...go to the most basic settings to get the XBox to connect....

Save & Reboot the router...

Take a look at the DGL-4500 forum for the XBL sticky. See if that can help. I played XBL and MW2 all last night on Single mode N at 2.4Ghz. Had a good time. Let us know if you need more help.

No difference, unfortunately.

Thanks, Furry.  Much of the help available is geared toward making Xbox Live function better. But, I can't get anywhere near Live. I'm dead in the water way before that.

Both automatic and manual settings within Xbox fail even though they clearly see the router's settings

Your ip says 0.111 but the dns says 2.1
That can create headaches I do believe.

Put the dns to automatic or manually
at 0.1  or  2.1  ?

Does your router have DNS Relay checked ?
Mine does....

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Let us know if you need more help. Some could remote in using teamviewer.com and help you out on your router settings.

Yep your gateway should be the IP of your Router. if your router is on 192.169.2.1 then all your IPs should run in the 192.168.2.X range.  A lot less headaches if everything is in the same subnet.  You can change the DHCP server on the router to reflect the .2, just change the address pool to hand 192.168.2.X to 192.198.2.X+ addresses.

That was a desperation move on my part. Since nothing else worked, I used the IP from the DSL modem instead.

cheers,

Something doesn't seem right. A DSL "modem" wouldn't give out a 192 IP unless its a modem/router gateway.  Sounds like a double NAT issue.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
