No System Logs
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:54:28 PM »

I have a new DIR-615 HW: E3, FW: 5.10. The admin console STATUS/LOGS page does not show any system logs. While I was testing and configuring this router prior to putting it online, it was sporadically showing log entries.  I have tried the default factory settings(System Activity, Attacks, Notice), as well as various combinations of custom Log Options (by the way, I noticed that the online SUPPORT pages show different options). Hitting the "Apply Log Settings Now" button seems to persist the settings, but nothing is recorded in the log. Rebooting the device doesn't seem to help.

Am I doing something wrong?

Probably not.

So is this typical? Is there a solution?

This might not be a problem as maybe there is nothing to report or log.
Try this. Power off the router for 30 sec, then power on. Have a WiFi device connect and get internet.
Then look at the logs, if you have them all checked and enabled. You should see initial power up entries that reports that the router possibly has acquired settings from the modem and it should report that one wireless devices has authenticated with the router.

Tried it, didn't care for it.  ;D

I have the defaults -- System Activity, Notice, Attacks -- all checked. Rebooting or power cycling the router, as well as periodic requests for an address from the ISP, computers requesting and receiving IP addresses from the internal DHCP server, should all show up. So far, nothing logged at all. With three teenage boys their mom and me, we have about 10 connected clients in my house. With all that, my old WBR-2310 used to fill up 20 pages of logs with this stuff in a day or two. Or in minutes, if it detected a Twinge attack.

Possibly the unit is defective. I would try another unit or a different model. If anyone is gaming or using specialized applications, I would recommend a different model router.

The logging options System Activity, Debug Information, Attacks, Dropped Packets, Notice don't coincide with the user manual or the router's internal support pages, which describe Firewall and Security, System and Router Status, with verbosity levels of Critical, Warning, Informational.

If the admin web page is attempting to set incompatible logging options, logging filter might simply ignore these settings. I think they have a bug. I already have the latest firmware, so I'm this close to flashing the unit with dd-wrt.

If the router is out of warranty then go for it. There is a thread regarding WRT on this forum here.
