Access Control Issues - DIR-825
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:59:26 PM »

I am trying to allow a block of 7 or 8 devices to access the internet all the time.  Two other devices I would like to allow internet access during a set time range.  Finally I would like to block internet access to all devices not in one of the above groups.  I need to use MAC addressing to identify the allowed devices.  I was able to do this with my old WRT-54G but the DIR-825 is giving me trouble.
My main problem occurs when I try to block access to "Other Machines".  When I do that all devices on my network are cut off the internet.

Reserve the IP addresses for each device first.
Setup the Schedule next
Then use Mac and or access control rules.

It's kinda odd the way they impliment this. However if you think about it, you set up the IP's first, make up the schedule for the times, then set up the Mac and access control to apply using the preset IPs and schedule. Took me a bit to work with it but it works.

I reserved the IPs associated with the MACs
I set up a schedule
I set the first rule - Blocking access to the internet at night for a group of MAC addresses. That works fine.
Then the second rule - another group of MAC addresses - Blocking all access never. (always allowing)? That also seems to work.
The third rule I want is to always block all other MAC addresses (Other Machines - Block all Access - Always) but this blocks all the devices on the network.
If rule three works I believe I will also need to change rule one to specifically allow access during the day instead of blocking at night.

And the devices in rule 3 are not the same devices in rules 1 and 2 right?
Wow. Kinda complicated. Should work I suppose. I haven't done anything this elaborate before.  :-\

The access control dialog has an option to choose "Other Machines".  I believe this is all machines not explicitly named in another rule.  When I choose to do that it ends up blocking ALL access to all devices.

I basically want to Allow a group of devices full time access, another group part time access and totally block every one else!

I guess I might have to set my 825 back online soon and test this out and see if I can repro this issue. I've got enough device I should be able to replicate your set up.
