Problems Right Out of the Box
« on: August 23, 2011, 05:36:25 PM »

Hi All,

I need an answer to this before I lose my sh*t.  And no, I'm not a troll.

Have everything connected fine, dropped in a drive I've used for a year with no problem in my toaster which I formatted prior to putting it in the NAS.  Ran the software supplied, started to format the drive, got to 99% and started giving error & debug requests, and after waiting about 30 minutes finally got frustrated and cancelled.  Tried another drive, same thing.

Is this common with this thing?

Definitely not normal. Which slot did you plug the drive in? And which firmware are you running on?

I just bought a DNS320 today, nearly got the Netgear MS2000 but decided against it as the stock firmware is supposed to be terrible. Anyway, I had the exact same issues when trying to set up the DNS320, the software was buggy as hell, kept giving me errors, had the option to ignore the error messages and continue, but the setup would hang eventually, finally on the third attempt set-up completed successfully having only suffered one error.

Having chosen this unit because of its supposedly superior software I'm now feeling pretty dissappointed.

Were the bugs you encountered associated with the installation wizard or the firmware?

If the errors were stemming from the Wizard application, the Wizard is not necessary to setup and configure the DNS-320. You can login to the web interface using the default user name and password and manually configure the DNS-320.

Just RMA it if it doesn't work as it should be out-of-box.

If the errors are caused by the setup CD, then there isn't necessarily wrong with the DNS-320.

Even so it's still unacceptable, setup CD is part of the package so why should one pay for something that's not working?

The setup package is available for download here: ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns320/Apps/. In all honesty, this application is not necessary to setup and configure the DNS-320.

Even if the issue occurred during the use of the setup application, the root cause is not necessarily the application or CD. There could simply be an issue with the user's client PC, which would negate any product defect on the part of D-Link. If this is the case, use of the setup application can be skipped.
