Accessing network shares for different users: W7 clients
« on: August 29, 2011, 04:24:27 AM »

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help as I have spent hours - days even, trying to resolve this problem.

I have a home based Windows 7 network from which I would like to be able to control access to folders on the DNS-320 which contain my and my wife's files. The various Windows 7 clients are part of a workgroup called "HOUSE". The DNS-320 workgroup is set to the same name. I can access the DNS-320 from any client on the network but access is open to anyone i.e. anyone can access all files.

I am simply want to set up 2 accounts (tony and susan)
Account "tony" will have read/write access to a network share called "tonysfiles" located in Volume_1
Account "susan" will have read/write access to a network share called "susansfiles" located in Volume_1
Ideally neither tony nor susan will have access to any other files/directories in Volume_1

I have created users "tony" and "susan" and I have created shares on folders "tonysfiles" and "susansfiles". I have allocated RW access to tonysfiles for tony and RW access to susansfiles to susan. Tony is denied access to susansfiles and susan is denied access to tonysfiles. Neither user is allocated to a group.

I have created a 3rd account for admin purposes called "jimmy" which has r/w access to the share: Volume_1

Setting all of this up is straightforward but accessing the relevant shares from my Windows 7 laptop is proving very frustrating. I have removed any cached credentials stored by Windows 7.

I keep getting error messages like "network access error" or "you do not have permission to access this network resource" or similar.

If I am able to access Volume_1 I can only see the files other than "tonysfiles or "susansfiles". No matter what I try it seems impossible to achieve what I am trying to do.

The user accounts created on the DNS-320 are identical to those on the Windows 7 machines - do they need to be? Do the passwords need to be the same?

Has anyone else achieved what I am trying to achieve? What am I missing?

I have tried various ways of achieving what I want to do. I have read the forums, I have tried using a Linux based client - all to no avail.

Can anyone point me in the direction of achieving what I believe is a primary user requirement of having such a NAS box and which appears to be so simple in theory?

Many thanks in advance.

PS - I think I may be making some progress. Could this be a permissions issue?

The folders: "tonysfiles" and "susansfiles" were created using Windows Explorer. I have recreated new shared folders using the DNS-320 Web File Server and I am able to access tonysfiles from the "tony" account on my W7 laptop and susansfiles from the "susan" account. Can I login to both shares within the same W7 login session? What is the best way to access the whole of Volume_1?

I do believe I am on the road to resolving this and it does appear to be a permissions issue.

Folders and files created/copied on the DNS-320 remotely i.e. from a Win client appear to set permissions which are not the same as if created using the Web File Server application on the DNS-320.

I am in the process of resetting permissions for the files and folders I want to share to Read Write and Exe for all users and groups and this appears to be allowing me to share the folders in the way I want.

I just set up the shares in the DNS-320 directly using the Management, Account Management section.  You can add users in the Users/Groups section and create / specify the folders there.  All my users are part of the group "workgroup."  I just added a new user today with access to only a specific folder, and on the user's computer I mapped the network drive and entered the login information while checking the box "remember my login credentials."  That user cannot map the other folders as the login popup restricts access if they don't know the login details.
