HELP ISSUE WITH RAID1 HD.
« on: August 30, 2011, 10:03:27 PM »

My left harddrive was no longer being recognized by the DNS, however it was not a harddrive failure. The left led indicator on the dns would constantly blink while the right one was a solid blue color. I searched around the internet and could not figure out what was going on. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Q1 - How have you determined that the hard drive is not being recognized?
Q2 - How have you determined that the hard drive has not failed?

In the early days of my DNS-323 I was very curious as to how certain aspects of it worked, and before putting it to use as a storage device, I spent many days testing & experimenting - and some of those tests included putting known defective drives in to see how the unit would respond - a continuously flashing blue drive light was one of the symptoms observed.

Assuming that the status page only shows one drive, you can remove the "failed" drive and power up the NAS so that it sees the drive missing.  Install the drive in a computer and, if it is in fact functional, remove all the partitions & reinstall it, and then power the NAS up again.  This will force the NAS to treat the drive as failed, and then as a "new" replacement.

If you don't already have a backup - make one before you start.

You imply that your disks are setup as RAID1.  If so, do as fordem says and remove the defective drive and use a USB/SATA caddy or adapter (you will need the necessary IFS driver if you ate using windows) and see if you can read anything off it.

If you can't see anything then you will need a replacement drive.

If you can see something but it appears to be a mess you have two choices - reuse the drive as fordem outlines or accept that it might be faulty in some way and replace with a new one.

to answer fordem.
Q1: I determined the drive is not being recognized when I logged into the DNS server it asks me to install a new hard drive with compatible size.
Q2: I determined the drive has not failed because the led link is still blue color.

but yes, I'll try to use an IFS driver tonight to see if it works.

1 - Your DNS-323 is seeing one of the RAID volumes as missing - hence the request.
2 - The blue LED indicates a drive is present and ready - it may or may not be useable and may or may not contain data.

Log into the web admin and go to the status page - see how many drives the DNS-323 thinks are installed.
