Random disconnects/reconnects
« on: August 30, 2011, 11:01:05 PM »

Pretty crappy for a 140 dollar router. It will just randomly drop my connection and then it will start again. Doesn't happen all the time but its a pretty big annoyance when it does. Whats up with this crap. Still on stock firmware.

What FW is currently loaded? these routers came with various versions.
What HW version is it?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Swap cables between the ISP modem and router.

This disconnect from the Internet or from a wired or wireless connection to the router?
If your getting disconnected from wireless on the router? What wireless modes are you using?
Any other WiFi routers near by?

If your getting disconnected from the internet completely, I would test a PC directly connected to the ISP modem and see if you notice the same issue. Just because you might be getting disconnected from the router doesn't mean is the routers fault. If the ISP modem looses connection, the router will show the same.
Any LOGS on the router and ISP modem at these time frames that show any disconnections?
What is the status of the router on Status/Device Info/Wan section when you notice this?

Need someone to check your router settings, lets use Teamviewer.com and help you out.

No need to update FW, yet. Lets find out whats wrong first and trouble shoot the problem before updating.

Ok so basically what happens is that I will be browsing fine. Then suddenly pages just stop loading, MSN messenger disconnects and no online applications will work. I have another router connected to the 4500, so basically I have two networks in my house. One 5 GHz (the DGL-4500) and the other 2.4 (for things that can't connect to 5 GHz). I will connect to my second network and tada, everything works fine! So what is up with this stupid router that just stops working all of a sudden for a few minutes. Its annoying as hell.

Firmware Version : 1.15,  2008/10/29
Wireless Radio : Enabled
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n and 802.11a
Channel Width : 20MHz
Channel : 40
WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Don't know what HW is.
Cable
SMCD3GN Modem
Wifi disconnects.

Unless the modem is regaining the connection in the 5 seconds it takes me to switch networks to test the connection and then loses it again in the 5 seconds to switch back, I doubt it is not the routers fault here.

Kind of funny my 7 year old 54 mbs microsoft router can keep a more stable connection than a high end 2 month old DGL-4500. Pathetic..

Wait, you have 1 wireless router, connected to another wireless router, connected to a 3rd wireless modem/router combo? Damn..I can think of all kinds of issues that could be going on. What do the logs say on the DGL-4500?

PS. We try to be friends here. If you want to vent, call up Dlink. They get paid to hear it. :-)

Well almost. Basically it goes from my modem to my DGL-4500. Then I only connected my other router to that to check out the connectivity issue. As I said, my second network (ie the one from my old microsoft router) works just fine, but the dlink network can't load pages or anything for a few minutes. I never had a second router connected to this the entire time. And they are each running at different bands anyway.

I am venting because when you pay for a high end product you would expect it to work with minor issues at the most. This is starting to happen frequently enough that it is getting on my nerves...

Oh I understand what its like to be frusterated by a problem. I also know what it's like to be pissed at a company. I am not saying don't be pissed, heck, Dlink could use a kick in the pants. Just saying no one here is Dlink. Not like other forums where you have mods and stuff. Just about all users.

Anyway, on to your issue. First, when you say the DGL-4500 is connected directly to your modem, do you if your "modem" is a SMCD3GN its not a modem at all? Its a wireless gateway. So I think you actually do have a router connected to a router connected to a router. 2 is bad enough, 3 is right out! (Insert Monty Python joke here). Seriously, even if there on separate bands, and wireless interference isn't a issue(which it still could be) there are so many other things to consider. You have NAT, or the translation of public to private IP address. Firewalls issue. DNS issues. IP conflicts (what is the DHCP range of each?). Plus many others. If your 4500 is loosing internet traffic on it's LAN while a router on it's LAN does not, that says to me its a issue with their two DHCP servers conflicting. How their conflicting I don't know, but thats where I would start. Try just running off the "modem" for a day or two. See what your connection is like. Or atleast, try disconnecting the old router and putting the 4500 in a mode all the devices on your network can use. See how that goes.

Actually the modem's routing capability has been turned off for quite a while now. Way before when I got this router anyway. I doubt it is the modem problem either. My old router never used to do this..

Even if a plane stops flying, it's still a plane. It doesn't turn into a car. :-)

But yea, I just done helping someone with a complex issue. Someone else can have this one.

I Think we could try going back to basics and lets try connecting the 4500 up to the ISP modem and using ONE PC to test. Lets disconnect everything else including the other routers and test with out any other devices. I would also swap out the LAN cable between the ISP modem and 4500 to be sure. CAT6 is recommended. Can you review the ISP Modem logs to see if there are any problems during this time frame that you seem to be disconnected from the internet? I would set up the Wifi on the 4500 for Single mode G at 2.4Ghz WPAPersonal and AUTO security and see if your seeing the same thing on this band. Does Wired connection exhibit the same disconnect?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless devices do you have connected besides the other router?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Right now I am getting the same problem as the OP.  I have the DGL-4500 connected to a port in the wall provided by the cable company NTC.

Firmware Version : 1.23NA,  2010/04/15
Wireless Radio : Enabled
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11g and 802.11b
Channel Width : 20MHz
Channel : 11
WISH : Active
Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Beacon Period: 80
RTS Threshhold:2100
Fragmentation Threshold: 2100
DTIM Interval: 1

I have wish on but there are no wish rules established yet, tbh i'm not really sure what that is.
Thanks in advance for any help

Try changing from misec G and B to single mode G.
There is some information about WISH in the stickys and feel free to give them a try.
I don't use WISH nor protected Wifi unless you have other devices like printers that are wireless and use protected WiFi. Turn them off.
Also turn off SHORT GI and WMM too.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off gamefule options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Ok, I switched to just G and turned off WMM and short GI.  When you say protected wifi, do you mean the Extra Wireless Protection checkbox? , because I am still getting disconnects now.

I also

Turned off gamefuel
Turned off Advanced DNS
Turned on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router (Two Fujitsu T900's, Two MacBook Pros, Two Ps3's)
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.\

Im using WEP for the security.  Could that be a problem?
Two Fujitsu T900's, Two MacBook Pros, Two Ps3's connected at any one time.
No house phones, just cell phones.
I'm in an apartment complex so there are tons of routers around mine.
