Below is a summary of everyone's input thus far. Please let me know if I over-generalized, misrepresented, or missed anyone's concerns and I'll refresh the list with updates. Recent additions/changes are highlighted in blue. Items addressed on the latest firmware are striked out.

If any additional items in the list below were fixed by the latest firmware, please post and I'll update!

  • GUI - Streamlined web interface (overly large icons and clutter make for difficult navigation)
  • GUI - Themed GUI option (e.g. PC, MAC, Linux)
  • GUI - Spanish language translation is incomplete (e.g. mail notifications)
  • GUI - Privileges in the folder properties screen are not clearly defined [FIXED!]
  • GUI - Control to change the default "Help" setting to "Hide" OR "Show" ("Hide": users must proactively click "?" to open help. "Show": Help is always visible)
  • General - Ability to configure the date format (e.g. YYYY-MM-DD)
  • General - Services configured with DYNDNS DDNS directs to the local IP (192.168.x.x) and not the outside IP (i.e. ISP)
  • General - Concurrent spin-up of both HDDs for RAID 1 (to reduce access delay)
  • General - User customized reports (ability to select variables to report against)
  • General - Ability to send email notification to multiple email accounts
  • General - Ability to rename NAS root volume names (i.e. rather than Volume_1)
  • General - Documented and configurable UPS support
  • General - Improve 3TB HDD support [FIXED!]
  • General - Time Machine OS X 10.7 Lion compatibility [FIXED!]
  • General - Recurring schedule for S.M.A.R.T. test
  • General - IPV6 Support
  • Backup - Add option in backup application to synchronize rather than backup

I believe this feature is already available (although not clearly documented).

This sounds exactly as I had dreamed of. This should be definitely documented! The on-line help in Web administration screen is probably the easiest to do. But user's guide shouldn't be missing this knowledge either.
PS what about my other wishes? Anything realistic in there?

There are many undocumented tricks and tips floating around this forum. I agree that this disparate material should be brought together in some form of consolidated help resources.

As far as some of your other suggestions are concerned, changing the "Volume_1" name is something that's been requested since the earlier legacy DNS models were released. The fact that the name still can't be modified probably means that the Volume name is closely tied (and referenced) at the core of the DNS, else I suspect D-Link would fixed this a long time ago. The suggestion you raised that I personally would place the greatest weight on is expanding the container/codec support, which would increase the usability for users with different media requirements.

I see. I just hope sorting the Bonjour advertisements should be fairly trivial, so I keep crossing my fingers for these also.

Bug in backup application:

I had set up a one off network backup and accepted the default time (the current time). The backup proceeded normally.
Later, I tried to modify the backup to repeat the one off backup. I found that I could not select the current time (to do the backup now) and the popup calendar showed 2010 and would not advance to 2011.
The current NAS time is correct and is automatically updated with NTP.
I deleted the backup configuration and entered a new one - the default time was then correct (the current time).

Suggestion:

There is a request to make the root name settable to something other than Volume_1. This would be nice but it would also be useful to be able to name a share. Currently the share takes the name of the directory being shared. If the share name was settable then the root (Volume_1) could be given an arbitrary name when shared.

Thanks
Jack

Already said, but I would really like to emphasize the need for the DLNA server to support more video formats, in particular high definition ones, like MKV. I would have never bought this unit if I had known of this limitation.

Also, the DLNA server should be capable of processing subtitles (.srt) files automatically, just like Samsung's PC Share Manager does. That is, to show subtitles automatically is a .srt file with the same name as the video file is present in the same folder.

Also, I don’t know is there is a good reason for using custom disk format, but I would really like that the DNS would use NTFS, so the user could eventually move the HD to a desktop or other USB box and use the data without reformating. That would also eliminate those silly compatibility problems between products.
Compatibility with Intel's Matrix technology would also be welcomed.

Most NAS manufacturers use the Linux filesystem, i.e. this isn't an issue specific to D-Link.

One more question: is there anything substantial that would prevent making SMB/CIFS also a switchable protocol, just as AFP, NFS and WebDAV currently are? I mean so, that I could explicitly switch it on or leave it off, at my own discretion?

I will work with any type of file. I have almost only .mkv file and they all work.
