Trouble formating
« on: September 06, 2011, 02:39:07 AM »

I've been using my 323 without problems with two 250gig HDs, RAID 1 configuration.

Just upgraded to 2x2TB Hitachi HDDs.  Brand new disks, never used before.

I've been trying to format these drives, but it freezes up every time.  With FW 1.09 it hangs at 30% complete, then looses network connectivity and appears to freeze up.  I moved to 1.08 and format freezes at 13% and then looses network connectivity.

The only thing I could find on the forums and online was the old 94% formatting issue, apparently resolves with FW 1.06.

Anything I can do to make this work?

I put the HDs in my workstation and viewed the disks.  Four partitions were created.  I removed them all and tried again, same result.

From the list of supported drives, I do not see any 2TB Hitachi drives.  If these are Advanced Format drives, you may need to first format them using beta firmware 1.10b7 and then reinstall 1.09.  There are numerous posting on the list.

Thanks, I found the beta firmware on the FTP site and will give that a try.

I'm using two Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 2TB drives, which have sector size of 512 bytes.

I've tried the latest two versions of 1.10 beta, still can't format my drives.  Formatting Seems to stall at about 30%.

I'd like to format using RAID 1/EXT3 but I can't get any formatting options to complete.

I read elsewhere on the forums someone is using these drives successfully with the DNS 320 and 321, too (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=37398.msg123951#msg123951)

Any tips as to how I can make this work?

Thanks,
Erik

Have you tried to format each disk individually as Standard or JBOD?  It seems to me that you now need to confirm that the disks are not the problem.  If there is a problem with a specific disk that helps to identify where you go from there.  If both disks can be formatted as Standard, they should be able to be formatted as RAID 1.

Yes, I've tried standard format each as standalone.  No love.

They seem to work just fine in my win7 machine.

In case anyone sees this in the future, I'm using 1.10b7 and everything seems to get stuck formatting at 11-12%
