Some light reading:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_pair

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable

http://ezinearticles.com/?Cat-5,-5E,-6,-and-6A-Cables---Distance-and-Speed-Limitations&id=1237951

I believe the actual xfer speeds and times can be affected by using a mixed of different cables however connected speeds shouldn't be. Realistically, people would run all the same type of CAT level. I have a mixe here however thats off the switch and not in between the switch and router and modem. Thats all CAT 6.

I think it makes sense when I order the Cat6 cables to order at least enough to replace all the current cables in use.

Curious... sounds like you are using all UTP and no STP correct?  Just wondering if anyone concerns themselves at all with AC adapter cables close by as a concern at all.  I always figured it was an issue with bigger power concerns but am wondering if AC adapter cables are causing problems (crosstalk interference).

To me it makes sense to go to Cat 6.

Ya, were using UTP here. Right now cables are not really installed properly as they are running up and down door way frames and down on the floor in the hall way in the existing house. Now once the new addition is done, ALL wiring will be properly put in place.

There can be cross talk however if you have cable runs in parallel close together, of course. However running cable perpendicular to each other helps clear this. I haven't had an issue of AD adapters causing issues on the network, only over x10 doe it reek havoc on our system here. LOL. AC adapters are mostly unregulated and noisy can when plugged in cause noise on the x10 lines. Were going to have to centralize AC adapters when we go to fully wire up the new addition. Were also having to make sure the video and audio wires are correctly installed and isolated from interference from AC lines as well.

Okay...maybe I'm having a brain cramp.  But since I moved my desktop and NAS over to the switch my desktop and laptop do not see the other via Network so I can move files between them.  Makes no sense and they all go through the DIR-825 ultimately.  Maybe adding the switch had nothing to do with it and it's some MS update but it was working and I haven't changed the settings in my security app.

Probably man. Moving devices to a switch makes things easier to network. Just have to make sure your devices are on the same work group for ease of use and listing in the networking section. Make sure folders and drives are shared out correctly and permissions are set up. Ensure any 3rd party firewalls are set up to allow connections. For me, I don't use 3rd part FW apps as there is really no need around my area and city. Router does that job well. Unless you have a business or have alots of people on your network, theres really no need for Firewall apps on devices. Not alot of call for hacking into ones network for home users IMO.  ::)

That's all done.  No idea what's going on.  I tried to setup a Homegroup but I do it on one machine and am supposed to be able to "join" from the other.  But, there is no "join" option when trying to joing the new Homegroup. WTF?

The firewall is fine as I had gone through that earlier this year.  I uses Eset Smart Security.  I have a business and run it out of my home office.  I'm in a townhouse and there are tons of WiFi signals around here so I prefer to play it safe.

Understandable, however I would disable the firewall temp to test and see if that is contributing to the cause. Turn it back on if not. I presume it had been working right>?

Yep... all worked fine.  The only thing I know of is any MS updates that had been installed.

Better go look at the update history. Odd that they would impact your networking and sharing.  ???

Looks like it's an issue with my firewall.  LOL.

I use Eset Smart Security.  Have had good look with it.  I always use interactive mode for the firewall so this way it ask for ALL inbound and outbound communication.  Locally,  for the LAN and WAN.

If I disable the firewall on both PCs and then the problem goes away.

There is some error I'm getting though when trying to access the laptop from the desktop.  Error code 0X80070035. Never have been able to figure this out.  Cannot get Homegroup setup between the two PCs either.

What are you using to set up the workgroup?

I use the Computer/Properties to set the workgroup name.
I don't use any of the SW wizards.

Probably the same as you.  I have Win 7 Pro 64bit on desktop and Win 7 HP 64bit on laptop.  I go into Advanced System Settings where  you can change the computer name and workgroup.

Odd...you may want to remove all sharing and shared folder access then start over with a clean work group and folder sharing and see if that clears it up.  ???

Going to do a little research on Error code 0X80070035. I see others have had this issue.  Going to see what I can find out.
