Are you devices using Dynamic Ip addressing or reserved?

Both.  I only set anything static in the DIR-825.  The desktop and laptop are dynamic.  The printer, Verizon Network Extender, NAS and Boxee Box are all static.

I'm still searching forums and people are trying all static with no luck.

Well... neither work when trying to access the other PC.  Oddly I can use either of the methods when accessing the NAS.

I'm confused as hell.  If I disable my firewall then each PC can see the other.  I setup a Homegroup and think that's a way to work around it. Instead of using Network in Windows Explorer.  Then I an my laptop can access my desktop but then even though my desktop sees my laptop through the Homegroup and I cannot open the folders. I reboot to see what happens and then neither PC has access to the Homegroup.

It's friggin' nuts as there seems to be no work around.

I noticed that one of those links I sent you mentioned that the Computer Browser serviced had to be started as theres wasn't. Is yours? I think it should be started by default. There are a few ideas that people mentioned on getting theres going. This is crazy. Is it possible to fully remove the ESET SW and test?

Remove Eset.  It can be done.

The thing is that doesn't help either is Homegroup.  I set it up and it works.  Even with Eset firewall enabled. Once I reboot the PCs.  No Homegroup connection.  WTF.

What do you mean by: "I noticed that one of those links I sent you mentioned that the Computer Browser serviced had to be started as theres wasn't. Is yours?"

As for the original post I wonder if there are tweaks that can be done for the NICs on the PCs to improve speed to the NAS.

Computer Browser is a Service under Manage/Services.

Possible there is some tweeks. I've heard of Jumbo Frames however I think you need compatible HW that supports that. Not sure though.  ???

"Computer Browser is a Service under Manage/Services. "  Okay, I checked this and mine was set to manual on both PCs.  I set it to Auto on both and restarted both PCs.  No impact.

Uninstalled Eset Secuirty Suite (ESS) on both PCs:

Still get the Error code 0X80070035 when trying to access the laptop from the desktop when using Windows Explorer -> Network.

If I setup a Homegroup the folders are viewable from the laptop to the desktop but now not accessible and I get the "Not accessible... Might be permission settings..... blah blah"

If I check the Homegroup on the desktop the folders for the laptop are viewable but not accessible. No errors no response when clicking on the folders.

Reinstalled ESS on both PCs with same config:

Same problems exist with or without firewall enabled.  Odd as I got different results earlier!  :-(

Looks like I'll need to setup a couple of folders on the NAS to share files since both can access the NAS and it's on all the time.

Dude!!  This is messed up and not good.

Hmm...
This is crazy man.
I know that on my system. Everything works, only thing I know I need to do is when I try to access the shared folder on my server, I use the log in and pw for the user account on the server. I have several folders on the server along with drives and external USB drives shared out. The server is 7x32, My pc is 7x64. Roomies is XP Pro and he can access the server just fine.

Everything is reserved IP on the router for the devices.
Goes from 825> 24Pt Gb switch out to devices.

Working with ESS to find out what's going on.  Get this.  When I disabled the ESS f/w I could access the desktop from the laptop. I could not do so the other way around as I was getting that error.  When I enabled the f/w I one computer could not see the other.

I uninstalled ESS on both PCs and reinstalled.  Now... the PCs still cannot see each other.  If I disable the f/w now the laptop says it cannot see the desktop and gives me a permission error? What?  I still get that same error on the desktop when trying to access the laptop with the f/w disabled.

How did this get worse?  I didn't do anything to change any permissions.

Laptop: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Desktop: Windows 7 Pro 64bit

I've been wanting to set it up so I could access one PC from the other via Network not Homegroup.  But I cannot get either one to work.

Is there something with Windows permissions that you can think of that I can check?

Hmm, Just checking my settings here:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings

They are all turned ON.

File Sharing Connections is set for Enable File Sharing  for devices that use 40-56bit Encryption.
Password protected sharing is ON.
Homegroup Connections are set for Use user accounts and passwords to connect ot other computers.

This is what I have running here. When I connect I can open Networing Icon on the destop and I see all my shares and PCs that are connected on the same workgroup. If I select one of the PCs to connect to, it brings up the log in screen, I use the user name and pw for that account on that PC that I'm trying to connected to, I don't use the username and pw thats on my PC that I'm using to connect.

Not sure what else might be looked at after this.

The way you have  yours setup up is the way mine used to work. Plus I prefer it that way.  I do use the higher encryption.

What security software you using?  Starting to wonder if I should toss ESS and use NIS now that I can get it free from Comcast anyway.  Reviews for NIS keep getting better and the recent ones I've seen are glowing.

I use anti-virus programs only. I don't use any firewall programs as the router handles that. Plus, theres not real need for firewall programs unless your not on a router. Also, not alot of hackers trying to hack into mom and pop's low end networking system.  ::)
Norton, McAfee, AVG or just anit virus programs only if your on a router system.

I also run Malware programs like Mal-warebytes to handle the items on web sites and such.
I've learned over the years to try and keep the PCs running lean as possible with out any unnecessary programs running in the background.

This ought to be more straight forward.  As in consistencies.  I got it working and here's what I did.  At the "Run" command I typed in the network name (//name) and then connected and then mapped drives to the folders on the other PC.  Have rebooted and I have confidence at this point it will continue to work.  Works in both directions.  Laptop to desktop and desktop to laptop.

Now...this a.m. my router farts.  No idea what happened. Suddenly lost internet access.  Connect directly to cable modem and all is well.  So, tried the usual steps first (power cycle cable modem and router, reconnect modem and when back online connect router, etc) and none of which worked.  I decided to reset the router with the 10 second hold on the reset switch.  I have saved off a config file already.  Gets me back online.  All seems fine.  However, it doesn't like the password that I KNOW that I have saved in this config file.

I only know to reset (10 second) again, reconfig manually and save a new config file.  Or, do you know of a workaround with the password?  Can't imagine what.

What FW version is loaded. Have you done any FW updates and used the same configuration file? What browser do you use when saving the config file?
