I just got a DIR-501 and wired it to my desktop. It runs great! (This DIR-601 board is the closest one I can find to DIR-501.)

After connecting the DIR-501, when coming out of hibernation or when booting up, my computer would hang, apparently after the desktop has already appeared (Win XP Home SP3). The first time this happened I got a BSOD with the following:

0x000007f (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Later I got a different series of numbers and a message complaining about I think ntfs.sys. At least once everything simply locked up with no BSOD.

The way I finally got my computer to boot up was to simply disconnect the DIR-501 until after the desktop is loaded. Then everything is fine and there are no BSOD's or lockups.

What might the problem be? I assume it has something to do with the PnP capability of this particular router, but I don't understand why that would hang up the computer only when initially booting up or coming out of hibernation.

Hmmmm, could it be that your adapter is being put into sleep mode and not waking up?

I know in Windows 7 under:

Network Connection Status>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab there's a default setting checked for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Maybe see if that's the case for yours and uncheck it.

I found the comparable setting in Win XP and have unchecked it. Will see what happens next time it is supposed to awake.

The idea that the network adapter wouldn't wake up out of hibernation sounds a bit strange since I've never had a problem connecting to the internet after coming out of hibernation. But if it works now, something about that setting must have been a problem.

I hope it holds out.  Sometimes it seems that a fix will work for a while, then quits, meaning that it wasn't the real fix at all.

I know in Windows 7 I'll delete old network settings in case they're corrupted or causing some kind of conflict with the newer ones.  I don't remember if XP allows that.

Also has the Devices NIC drivers been updated by chance?
