DNS Problem on Internet facing interface
« on: September 30, 2011, 07:49:36 AM »

From last 2 days, although my DIR655 is working fine. I am using internet through PPTP on the router, but when i open a webpage or even ping any domain, the domains doesnot resolves. Infact when i ping the public ip of google i replies normally...

On the other hand when i use routers DHCP Client and try to connect to isp pptp server and connect to internet through pptp client on my pc and browse webpage and ping and stuff... it works fine.... I mean on DHCP mode it allows DNS queries to be forwrded back and forth, but on PPTP or direct internet connection it does not allow DNS...

PLEASE HELP
DIR-655

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What are you using for DNS in DHCP mode vs PPTP? Are you actually using a VPN?

Here is the scenario...

I have a local cable network, on which i get a lease of 10.x.x.x class dynamic ip, lets say 10.103.12.240 and subnet 255.255.248.0... on this localnetwork only the cablenet's own web portal is available for downloading movies, games etc. and no other website is accessible because of gateway time out...

Then i dial a pptp vpn to their server through their localnetwork to 10.101.10.6...
After that i get routes and i get a public ip like 111.119.X.X, now i can browse internet or do whatever i want....

Now What i do with Dlink DIR 655 to connect to internet

1. First of all i connects my localclients to router via ethernet giving them a 192.168.0.x ip
2. Configure WAN to PPTP and (use and sometimes not use) Advance DNS
3. Enable DNS relay in localnetwork

What problem am i having:
I can ping public ip through clients and router itself... but nor the clients or router can resolve any of the dns requests...
But when i donot connect the PPTP VPN, miracally router resolves DNS queries over localnet and allow me access to the cable operator's webportal

Ive been using this router from last 3 years, it worked gr8 from then... but its now 4 days that its giving me some issues....

What does the router show for a DNS when its connected with PPPtP, and can you ping it from the routers diagnostics?

What are you using for DNS though? Like what are the servers IPs? That way I can test them and make sure they are functioning.
