DNS 323 with Mac OSX Internet Sharing
« on: September 30, 2011, 10:46:22 PM »

I recently hooked up a shiny new D-Link DNS 323 NAS Box. After hours of problems getting past the initial configuration stage, the problem boiled down to DHCP settings. The way our network is set up is that a mac connects to the internet, with internet sharing enabled on it. All other computers connect via a series of ethernet switches and an Airport Express connected to one of the switches. I assume in this sort of a setup that the Mac acts as the DHCP server and all other computers connect to it fine. However, the D-Link for some reason does not get its ip address from the DHCP server and instead assigns itself one. The problem with this is that it is not on the same subnet and cannot be accessed by any of the other computers. One way to get around this is to manually assign an iP address to the D-Link, which currently works. However, now that i have done this, the internet sharing on the mac occasionally disables itself. Why is this happening and what can i do to fix it.

If you assign a manual address to the DNS323 that is OUTSIDE the DHCP server assignment range, then whether it is static or dynamic will have no effect on your situation. As for why your Mac is dropping sharing, I'd suggest a Mac forum rather than a NAS forum as the two issues are not related. It is possible somone here may know, but you'd likely have a better chance elsewhere.

You have probably looked into this, but is the Mac always awake?  I am just thinking that the connection might be dropped if one of the devices is asleep.
