Update firmware to use network monitor widget...
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:39:12 AM »

I have a DIR-655 router running 1.21.  The last couple of years, I've always been checking the firmware version by pushing the "Check Now" button on the web management - it has always responded with "This firmware is the latest version. "

I've been researching networking monitoring tools and came across this link: http://www.dlink.com/widgets

It requires that you update to the latest firmware - and this time I sued on the on-line link - and it turns out that the firmware version for my device is actually 1.35NA???

So... first question is - why does my router tell me that 1.21 is the current version?

I'd like the network widget - what are pros/cons of updating from 1.21 to 1.35NA?

Have there been fixes to the scheduling portion? - 1.21 cannot handle 24-hour time properly.  I also have to reset the router daily - sometimes more often - due to problems when used wirelessly.  (Fortunately I try to use wired as much as I can.)

Any other comments regarding a more recent firmware update are appreciated...

Thanks and cheers!

1. Probably because anything over 1.21, you can't go back, so they don't want you clicking the button without first weighing the pros and cons. Considering thats exactly what you were doing (teasing here) I think the router did the right thing. Heh.

2. I assume you don't have HW B? If not, here is a break down of the revision fixes. Just click on Firmware on the top right.

As for real life use, sorry, can't help you there. I gave my DIR-655 away before the new builds.

Thanks Hard Harry...

1)  You mean in case I'd rather put up with unplugging the router once a day because the wireless portion stops working?  :)   A notification that there is an update with a link to the firmware versions might be more appropriate.

2)  Yes... I don't have a Rev B.  I had already gone to that link... that's what led me to the discovery of  my old firmware.   The information is there is not great... I can't tell what my wireless crashing is from so saying something like "Fixed DHCP Server Issue" for example - is bordering on useless... what was the issue?  I guess they are not big on documentation...

Is that all D-Link has for revision history?  How can I make an educated decision?

PS:  Almost forgot... what is the minimum requirement to use D-Link Network Monitor Widget?  That page only says "the latest"..

Is there a problem with the router or is this a general question. I do recommend troubleshooting the problem before updating FW as most FW updates wont fix other issues that are seen on the router or may only hide the problem for a short period of time before it rears it ugly head. Let us know if we can help you.

I listed the issues that are affecting me - above:

1)  Wireless crashing - at least 3 times a week ...perhaps more.

2)  Scheduler does not work properly because the way 24 hour time is calculated.

I've been living with this, because I've thought there were no further firmware updates...  fortunately I don't use that much wireless - but I wanted to try out this network monitor widget.... and it requires the "latest firmware."

Cheers!

In terms of troubleshooting: not sure what I can tell  you... wireless stops working on my wife's iPad - I power cycle the router - then it works again.

The 24 hour issue relates to trying to create a schedule over midnight - like block service from  11 PM to 6 AM.  I've managed to do this by creating a schedule to block from 11-12PM and then from 12:01 - 6AM. (Which works)

I want start monitoring traffic which is why I'd like to know what the minimum requirement is for that widget...

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

1. Oh yea, I agree. Like I said, I was just teasing. It may not be a good reason, but its the best one I can think of.

2. I would say the "Fixed: Correct HNAP issue." is the key, because HNAP is what most applications use to communicate and troubleshoot network devices from computers. I poked around on google, couldn't find anything more. Usually you don't get more then that. Heck, some routers companies barley even give release notes.

What do the logs say when it happens? And when you say the wireless, can we presume that the wired connections stay working? I agree with Furry that firmware updates shouldn't be done blindly. It will just complicate the issue.
