Hey, thinking about this forum and how I hope it's helped many people over the years.
I feel it's time to offer up some User input on what we as users would like to see DLink improve and or make changes to this site. Request only your ideas and suggestion regarding Look, Feel, Use of the site only.
Please NO technical problem solving or HW complaints here. Just your ideas and suggestions on what you'd like to see to help improve this site.

This is not restricted to just the 4500 forum, like to have input from ALL users on this site. I will post this link in others as I can't post this in the Main root forum.  ::)

Yes, the word "BETA" needs to go so thats already spoken for. LOL.  :P

1. Change the color and style.
2. More Dlink Moderator or Technical Support presence desired.
3. More abilities giving to high ranking users to perform operations such as ridding SPAMMERS.  >:(

Just a few, now it's your turn.
Please be detailed and respectful. After all these are ideas and suggestions. The more respectful and concise the information is, the more DLink might be more open to them and take them to heart.

Let the flood gates open!  ;D

I'm not going to be much help.  I think the way the forum is broken down is much better than Linksys or Netgear's sites.

Linksys lumps all their routers into a "wireless" category, but Netgear's is a little more organized like this one. However, I find that the support from the Users here is much better because the folks here aren't typically snooty like some can be on the Netgear forum.  Just sayin'.

. . . I find that the support from the Users here is much better because the folks here aren't typically a-holes like on the snooty Netgear forum.  Just sayin'.

Ahem [clearing throat], "JavaLawyer" is also a member of the Netgear support forum (although rarely active anymore). It was too much work putting on my "snooty" hat each time I logged in. :)

ROFL!  Oops!  Well, you were the exception to the rule, bud!  There's a mod named "Joe" on there who's also a good and helpful guy.

Actually, I revised my OP because there are only a few there that are snooty and that make the rest look bad.   ;D

ROFL!  Oops!  Well, you were the exception to the rule, bud!

No harm, no foul.  :P

In comparison to D-Link, the Netgear forum is very large and active. The main forum branches off to different forums for related product lines. The ReadyNAS forum links to a completely different location, probably because that product line was from the acquisition of Infrant.

The streaming media device forum is very organized and has a very experienced group of Netgear employees/mods and users. Everyone there went the extra mile to help out.

(P.S. Still doesn't change the fact that I think their routers stink ;D)

Ideas for improvement.

1. Better Spam control. Nothing kills a thread more then a add for foot fungus cream or some other junk. I can further break this down to the fallowing ideas.
  • IP blocks, on both registration, and posting. The majority of our spam comes from China, or Asia in general, while very few of our posters do. And a white list could be created for the few who do post from that area.
  • Put a 24hr delay between registration and posting and having it show on the board, that way large spam runs can be cleaned before they do damage.
  • Red flag anyone that tries to post more then 10 posts within that 24hr period.
  • Create the ability for Mods/Powerusers to select all attempted posts for a given user. It would make cleanup alot easier.
  • Put some kind of language barrier up. Red flag anything that is not in English.
2. Chat room for users over a certain post count. That would not only keep the spammers and flammers out, but would a cool perk for those of us that bust our hump helping this site.

3. More Dlink support. Perhaps the Powerusers could dog ear, or mark somehow, the threads that could aid from some official Dlink input. Sometimes we need inside input, and post here and there would do PR wonders.

4. Email notification of posts. Self explanatory.

5. Removal of the Beta tag. Its really not doing anything up there.

6. A scrolling frame above the main post frame for the Stickies. Some of the router forms are like 50% sticky

At the same time, I thought it would nice (and important!) to fallow up with what I like about the forum and DON'T want to see change.

1. Design. Its simple, to the point, and efficient. I would hate if someone pulled a PS3 and thought installing flash menus or some other fancy stuff would make it better. PLEASE don't do that.

2. Easy going. I like that I don't have a moderator breathing down my neck. Don't get me wrong, a post from a Mod once every couple of days or weeks is great, but we also don't want someone deleting posts and banning anyone that says something bad about Dlink.

3. Login system. I like that we can just login, and it doesn't time out. Its a simple thing, but it helps alot.

4. Stickies. They are helpful. I know I said before we could use a way to better organize them, but I would hate if someone just removed them as a easy fix. They really help.

5. This forum in general. I know we may complain alot, but honestly, I have made more friends here then all my other forums combined. Thanks Dlink!

Each parent board would benefit from a child board called "FAQ" where we can post stickies and threads providing solutions, resources, and advice specific to an entire hardware series.

That's a great idea. I was thinking a scrolling frame, but a child board is much better.

Check out the "D-Link Digital Home" board and look in the "News" child board. This forum needs a similar board for each product line.

Hi JavaLawyer,
I recently registered and had some problems with the process.
(a) The registration process emailed me an activation code, however I never received it.  I tried using the resend activation code process and it failed too, likely for the same reason.  I have a suspicion that it failed because I have an email address that is 34 characters long (incl domain) and perhaps the system cannot accommodate an email of this length?
(b) I did get registered by telling the system to send the activation email to another (shorter length) email id I use for personal emails.  This approach allowed me to activate my user id/account.  After activation, I edited my profile and changed the email back to the first email address - the one I first registered with and really wanted to use.  As a result of this, I was surprised when the system then sent a new activation code to the amended (first, long) email address.  I got into a activation loop because again, I never received the (new) activation code.  This process is strange given that I had already activated my user id.
(c) I could find no administrator email address on the site to request assistance.  I tried forum@dlink.com but got no reply.  In the end, today, I registered again.  So, now I had to create a new user id that I don't really want to use, and I have to use an address I don't want to use too.  I think the whole registration process, activation codes, user email address lengths and lack of direct contact with site administrators needs to be reviewed and improved.  p.s. I would have sent this as a PM but again, I cannot see how I could do this on the site.

For users looking that the new forum theme, please review your monitor and video resolution configuration. Some minor brightness or contrast adjustments on the monitor maybe needed. Also review your browser zoom settings as well. Setting a new zoom will help bring some text into view.

Using a iPhone 4S, Mac Book Pro 15" LCD, 24" HP LCD and a 27" ViewSonic LCD Set to maximum resolutions for each monitor with brightness below normal default levels is very clear for me.

On Windows PCs, DPI adjustments under Display settings should be tested as well.

Some fonts are smaller than expected. Will check on enlargement of default text fonts and make changes to current color linked text.

We recommend avoiding using of RED and default blue colors when posting.
For those wanting a different visual with out a theme, try this:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?wap2

Please be patient.

P.S. Staring at black text on white back grounds for long periods of time, even with breaks, is hard the eyes. Especially for those of us who watch the forum boards all day.  >:(

The dark background with light type face is really terrible and much harder on the eyes.  I prefer the older method and it was easier to detect  new posts.  How exactly is this new format supposed to be better?  Who was so powerful that they could decide without user input that this is better?   It sucks and so does the process by which it was done.
