I need your Help Furrynutz
« on: October 12, 2011, 08:02:04 AM »

Hi.  I'm having problems with my router ever since my kids smart phones started using the home WIFI.  It seems like they cause an error and it kicks the router offline.  The only way to get back on the internet is by cycling power on both the modem and router.  Also, when I look at my wireless internet connections, it currently shows 8 dlinks (all mine) and keeps adding more.  I would be extremely grateful if you could check my settings out.  Thanks,
Mark

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

We can use teamviewer.com and review your router settings with you if you need too.

I was curious why your Advanced settings didn't have a QoS option. I see now that the latest FW add's it to the router. If your not not worried about Quality of Service used in gaming and doing a lot of downloading between devices, I wouldn't worry about updating. Keep us posted on the new settings and if you see any wireless issues causing the router to be kicked. If you do then we might have you update FW.

Well the problem did improve...but I still have to reboot the router several times a day.  I'm sure it's because we now have 3 smartphones and a laptop using the wireless signal. Should I just go out and buy a new "better" router?  If so, any recommendations?

Well the DIR-615 is a lower end model, but I would hate to fix a problem by throwing money at it, specially when we don't know if it will fix the problem.

With that said, if you cant I can TeamView in and see if I see any patterns on how the devices being connected. You can IM me on Google chat Tecknowhelp@gmail.com.

Skel, have Harry take a look for you on the router settings. If it's still not working right then there might be something going on. Are there many or other WiFi routers in the near by vicinity?

I would also mention to Harry, check the uPnP setting. Turn it off to test. I believe short GI is already off. Check the WMM Enable setting to. I think it should be ON.

Keep us posted.

Check the router settings again. Did a few things to the router, enabled SSID from hidden. Changed Auto scan to Manual Chl 11. Enabled WMM Enable.

He's on a Bell - WiMax provider. The speedtest.net was below 1Mb for UP and DOWN.

Having him try wired with the router to see if connections exhibit the same. Recommended he find a diff ISP and get a hold of a different router. Recommended the DGL-4500.  ;D No wired ISPs in his area.  :'(

Post back with your 615 results if you see any differences. Let us know about if you get a new ISP.
