Will I lose my data?
« on: October 14, 2011, 05:15:00 PM »

Hello, and sorry if there is a similar post elsewhere, but I tried a search and could not find my question.

Details:
running XP on two computers, networked
new DNS320 box
new Samsumg F3 1TB hdd
old hdd, from crashed pc, Samsung F3 1TB

I began by setting up the DNS with both drives as Raid 1 and appeared to almost complete setup.
Got as far as formatting drives and the L drive failed and caused a "degraded" status.
Swapped L & R to attempt again and rule out bad DNS box.
Got a little farther as both formatted, but hung at 1% in the sync.
I verified it was the old drive, and pulled it to dos format and fixmbr & fixboot.
Put back in and even though the DNS software finds both drives, it will not go beyond 1%.
Pulled the old drive and sending in for warranty.

The DNS was setup as Raid 1 and still reports as degraded with one drive only.  If I try to go thru setup again, the software wants to reformat as Standard storage and not a raid.  I decided to leave it alone and hope it stays as a Raid 1, and have started transferring info to the drive.

Soooo, my question:  When I get the replacement drive, and the system formats it, will it simply re-sync (actually complete the sync) and leave my data on the other drive alone...or will it wipe it out?

Thanks...I know this is a small forum, and it will likely be a month before I get the drive...so I am very patient for responses.

Well, I got my own answer.

When I got the replacement second drive for my 320, I already had my data on the R drive and I installed this one in the L slot.

320 wanted to format the drive...OK
320 said that it would sync the data and it would be safe, but the next screen said it would erase the data on R drive during sync.
I pulled out the L drive again, and rebooted the 320.
I turned it back off, reinserted the L drive and rebooted.
This time I got the sync screen without the format notice and it began syncing.
85 GB and 3.5 hours later, the sync was done and my data was still there.

I do not think I needed to pull the drive like I did, but I felt better the second time and it worked.

I love this device.  I love the Apple/iTunes sharing.  I also love to use VLC Media Player (free) from my laptop and access the NAS to watch movie ISO's I have stored on it.

I do wonder about the heat and how many house the device will work with failure, but I am thrilled at the moment.
