New to wireless network
« on: February 08, 2009, 11:41:05 AM »

I have just set up my home network.  I have an EMachines Windows XP PC and a Dell Inspiron laptop.  I am using  the D link DIR-615 router, with a Linksys notebook adapter.  (Hope that's enough info) My problem: the laptop says, "you are currently connected to network" it also says "limited or no connectivity" It tells me I have excellent signal strength.      What went wrong?  The IP adress is 169.xxx for laptop and the PC has a 192.xxx.   I also have an Apple I-Touch that needed wi-fi connection.  It is connected to my network and running fine, just not my daughter's laptop.   Please advise.

Are you running XP on the ones that have a problem by any chance? I know this message appears if you haven't got SP3 running, but I had a similar message WITH sp3. If you go into the network connections bit of the control panel, right click on your connection and then disable the ieexxx settings and reboot you might solve the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion but before I do that....does it make a difference that I also have a Westell modem connected to this network.  I forgot to mention that before.

Firstly, is the internet running at all on any computer? Is the modem connected directly via a cable to a computer, and does that computer have internet access? Does the third light from the left on the router come on?

If you have internet working on a directly attatched pc, then I'd suggest the problem might be as above. If you don't have internet access then a phone call to support may be a good idea.

To suzblue-- basically your need to have an IP address for your laptop that is in range with router. Check for the IP address of the network adapter installed in your laptop computer. It should have an IP address that start from 192.168.x.x. so that it can connect to the DIR-615 router. If you still have some problem I advised to phone for call support. You can access the website of D-Link by logging into www.support.dlink.com

Are any of the other devices connected via wireless displaying the same symptoms or do the other devices wireless status remain stable?  I had a situation similair to yours. A WS continually dropped off or showed up as connected but no internet access. I brought a laptop to that same physical area and the signal strength was better, and it connected, remained stable, and had no problems.
This pointed to the USB Wireless adapter installed in the WS wasn't picking up the signal as well as it should have.

I returned it yesterday but haven't decided if I wanted another USB adapter or install an adapter in one of the bus slots inside the WS.
