Problems with Satellite and Router
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:54:14 AM »

Hello,

I recently upgraded from a Linksys WRT54GL to D-Link DIR-655 for gigabit networking.

On my previous router i had the following connected:

- ISP modem
- TV
- HTPC
- Dreambox satellite receiver.

Now when i connect those same devices on the DIR-655, all connect ok except my Dreambox. It just cant get an ip from the router.  tried playing with the router settings but i dont really know what to do. I have DCHP server enabled in the router config.

If DHCP is selected on Dreambox i get the default dreambox ip 10.0.0.97 which shows an error in connecting. I even tried connecting with a static ip but still nothing. (ip:192.168.0.145 - subnet:255.255.255.0, gateway:192.168.0.1, nameserver:192.168.1.1).

Keep in my mind if i turn off the DIR-655 and switch to my linkysys, dreambox acquires DHCP details automatically.

It seems to be that a setting exists in the router config that can fix this i hope, because if not it was a really bad upgrade choice for me.

Please help, i've been at it for 3 days now and really i am desperate to see why this problem exists.

Thank you in advance.

Is your dreambox set up for manual reserved IP address in it's networking properties? Seems that it still picking the old address. Make sure the dreambox is set up for auto obtain on the device itself. I would call the Mfr or svc provider and ask for help if you can't get it to setup for an IP address.
I would also check the cabling between that and the router and make sure it's in good working condition, swap if need be.

Hello and thanks for the reply.

Well I tried setting manually the IP details but still no luck. Normally with the DHCP it picks up the right info.

I am trying to figure out what the router doesn't like about the dreambox and does not give it an ip. Its really strange.

I also tried changing the ethernet cable and lan port but no luck

Can you see any LAN port activity lights on the back of the dreambox?

In the Network Settings on the 655, try checking the Always Broadcast box in the DHCP Server Settings.

there are no activity lights when connected to either router. what i dont get is why it works with the linksys and not with the dlink

i  have the always broadcast enabled.

Have you swapped cables to make sure the cables are good?
Is there a manual LAN link speed setting on the SAT box?

Yes i tried switching cables as well as lan ports. no luck

I have no idea if there is a "manual LAN link speed setting" on the sat box.

below is the screenshot of where i am changing settings:

The box next to DHCP, is that checkable? You might check that. I see that your addresses are at 1.#. Is your router DHCP pool set for the the same 192.168.1.1 or 0.1? Dlink routers use 0.1 as default.

I would try checking the DHCP box and see if that helps, if not, check your IP address pool and correct the address string to match the 3rd and 4th numbers with that the router is putting out.

The screenshot I posted was found through google. It was just a samplw to show you the settings.

I used both dhcp and also the 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 for both the router and the dreambox respectively.

Ok so if you are using 192.168.0.1 as the routers address, You should be able to check that box next to DHCP and it should pull a 192.168.0.# something like 100 up to 199 if your using default router settings on the 655.

Are you able to put a check in the box next to DHCP or is that just a odd box there for some reason? Need to know if this is a user check option here.

Are you seeing any activity lights dictating that the LAN cables are connected and data is flowing over the cables? Look at the front of the 655, is the port light on for the port your connected to with the Dreambox?

I am using the routers default settings, but have also tried changing it to 192.168.1.1.
I tried with DHCP enabled, everything else is disabled when you choose it and the dreambox get the error ip of 10.0.0.97

the lan port on the DIR-655 is not blue, everything else connected is blue except for the dreambox. What i dont understand is why the dreambox doesnt work with d-link and it works with a linkys one? it seems that either the router or the dreambox dont like each other for a reason.

Another thing i am thinking of doing is borrowing a dreambox for a friend and trying that to see if the same error occurs.

I would call the Mfr of Dreambox and ask them why it's still wanting 10.0.0.97 and see if they have any information on there devices working with Dlink routers. Might be a possible incompatibility.

I would do just that, either take the 655 router to your friends house or bring his Dreambox over and connect it up to the 655 and see what happens.

If your not getting any port light indication on the 655 means that the Cable or connectors are bad, connectors are not fully inserted in to the port connector well or the port on the device has been disabled. I would also check the connection tines in side the port connectors them selves just to make sure they are not by chance bent or twisted. They should be straight.

Keep us posted.
