MTU setting
« on: October 22, 2011, 07:12:46 AM »

I was wondering if you should leave the MTU setting to the default setting of 1500 or change it your optimal value?  It seem everyone has a different opinion on what it should be, so I decided to ask you guys, the experts.

I performed the "ping -f -l 1472 www.google.com" tests to see what my optimal MTU setting was and it turned out to be 1492.

Does this really do anything and what should the value be?  I am on cable not DSL.

Generally you should leave it at 1500 for cable and 1496-2 for DSL. Might call your ISP and ask them what they prefer.
