Is Static DHCP supported on DIR655?
« on: February 10, 2009, 08:40:44 AM »

Hopefully someone can clarify or help me out with this.

I used to have a DI-614+ router and was able to assign static IPs to my network. My DHCP Server range was 100 to 106, used for guests who needed access to the network. Outside of that range, I had setup Static DHCP to assign the same IP addresses to a specific computer (MAC Address) in the house.

On each computer in my network, I had configured the TCP/IP properties to use the same static IP listed in the Static DHCP list. Here's the configuration:

DHCP Server:
Starting IP Address: 192.168.0.100
Ending IP Address: 192.168.0.106

Static DHCP Enabled
Static DHCP Client List:
Computer A - IP Address: 192.168.0.87
Computer B - IP Address: 192.168.0.88
Computer C - IP Address: 192.168.0.89
etc...

I can't seem to figure out how to do this on the DIR-655. Is this done via the DHCP Reservation? My understanding is that the DHCP Server range that I assign (ie. 192.168.0.100 to 106) is what is managed by the router. Outside of that range, I have assigned static IPs.

I've set my network up this was so it's easier for me to monitor traffic, problems and setup port forwarding for BTs.

Thanks for your help.

It is. It is called DHCP Reservation.

Does this mean that I have to increase the IP Address range of the DHCP server in order to obtain this reservation? Currently, I have 100 to 106. For example, if I wanted to reserve .90, I would have to increase this range from .90 to .106?

Correct.. Or why not use the default range? Also If your PC's still have static IP's they will not show in you DHCP client list (Assuming your PC's still have static IP's ending in .90. By default the DHCP range is set from 100-199) Set your PC's back to obtain an IP automatically and then do DHCP reservation.

Thank you both for your help.

It's easier for me to just change the range in the router. I just wasn't sure why Static DHCP was no longer available? I guess D-Link has changed this? I'm assuming that it will work in the same manner and I shouldn't encounter any problems when port forwarding. If I do, I'll post back here.

Thanks again.

Not sure how D-Link was using the Static DHCP but I know that others were requiring a network MAC id to be registered in the 'DHCP' service.  Once registered, the IP address assigned would always to the corresponding network adapter, based on the MAC id.  This seems to exactly what D-Link's DHCP Reservation is doing.
