Problems with Local Backup and iTunes server
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:22:07 PM »

I can not make Local Backup and iTunes server to work in my DNS-325 (firmware 1.02).

As for the Local Backup, I tried to configure a PC (win7) to NAS backup, as a LAN backup, in anonymous and account mode (using the same login/password used to log into the machine), but no success. The syntax used for the source (win7 machine) is \\<pc_name>\users\<user_name<\<directory>. The result of the "Test" is that the folder can not be accessed. I tried turning off the Kaspersky 2011 Internet Security firewall off, and also the firewall in the Linksys e4200 router; same results.

As for the iTunes server, I configured it in the DNS-325, and now it appears at the left side bar in the iTunes application. However, when I choose the server in that bar in iTunes, it shows a message in the top message window of iTunes, with a progress bar, but never ends, no error messages, and no files shown.

Anybody?

Thank you

iTunes 10 Breaks Windows Home Server Streaming Support

Thank you
One down, one to go.

As for my other problem, I still can make the Local backup to work.
The result from the test is:

URL              \\kuster\users\fernando\documents\
Test Result    Fail
File Size        Unavailable

The result is the same, no matter if I introduce the "right" parameters or not. I mean, if I introduce the right account and password, or the wrong ones, the result is the same.
I tried with two different Win7 machines, same result.

Anybody?

I have DNS-325 now for about 2 weeks. Firmware the latest 1.02; Windows 7, Ultimate on one machine, Windows 7 Professional on a lapt top. Just getting to try Local Backup & I-Tunes streaming. I have same problems Venfan had in November. The post referred to by Terry Walsh about Ver. 10 of I-Tunes was posted in Sep. 2010 so apparently no fix from Apple yet. That takes care of the I-tunes streaming problem, at least for now.

But I am also having the same problem as Venfan had with local backup. I've tried every format, forward slashes, backward slashes, computer name, computer address, account with User Name and Password, no account and anonymous, etc. and I get nowhere. Both computers. I either get a message of "URL format is not correct. Try again", or -

URL: <nothing in here>
Test Results:  Failed
File Size: Bytes

Has Venfan solved his problem? If he has, share it. If he hasn't, does anyone else have a solution?

Not absolutely sure but it looks to me like local backup is for if you have more than one volume and you want to backup from the DNS-325 to the DNS-325.

From experience with a 323 I know Windows backup makes a mess that is difficult to delete if you ever want to.

I myself would look for free software or try something like Acronis, which will also allow you to image your hard drive directly to the 325 and will also restore from the image on the 325.

Yes, I solved the problem by using the IP instead of the laptop name.
Here are my settings:

Backup type: LAN
Logging Method: Account
Account name: same as in Win 7
Password: same as in Win 7
Type: Folder
URL: \\192.168.1.112\users\venfan\documents\
Save to: volume_1\backup\laptop_name\documents\
Recurring Backup: every day
Incremental backup: yes

Use the Test button to check that access is successful.

An independent entry is needed for each independent folder you wish to backup. In my case, I have three entries for each PC: My documents (documents), Favorites, and Desktop. Pleae note that in windows 7 the real name for folder "My documents" is "documents". If you use "My Documents", it will not work.
Of course, you can choose to backup your entire user profile ("venfan" in my case), and use just one entry, but then you will end up making backup of a bunch of files that you not be interested in. Your choice.

Also, for those that use spanish windows 7, note that the name of the folder will look to you like "Mis Documentos" in the windows explorer, but the real name to be used is in english, that is, "documents"

Previously I was using my laptop name instead of the IP. I am not a network wizard, but the conclusion is that there may be a missing setting in my router, so it could not resolve the name to IP issue. I will try at some moment to solve this, so I can use the PC name. Or maybe anyone??

iTunes problem is still unsolved.

Hope this helps...
