a quirky situation if ever there was one
« on: October 23, 2011, 06:47:33 PM »

I have been using the dir655 for a several months, everything fine.
I upgraded my Itouch and no longer can get the itouch to find my position on the mapping application.  I can connect to the internet, send texts etc so I know I am connected and I can see ithe itouch is connected when I go into the router but it will not find my position, worked great on the earlier Itouch firmware. I take the Itouch out to other places with wi-fi and the itouch connects right away.

I installed an older Cisco g router and instantly the mapping system worked.

I did try to set the 655 to g mode but that didnt help.  A very odd situation.

If I had any hair it would have been long gone. :)

It must be a combination of the newer firmware on the Itouch and compatibilty on the 655 router somehow but what I havnt found out yet.

Oh yeah   My friends upgraded Itouch will not locate in the mapping app on the 655 either

Check your DNS. Your probably using "Advanced DNS" on the DIR-655, which is directing your DNS to a central one tied to Dlink. The thing is, since it is a central server without anycast, it doesnt read geo tags, so can tell where your coming from based on IP. I suggest turning off Advanced DNS, turn off DNS relay, and set the DNS on the router to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You can pick other DNS later, if you wish, but see if that works.

Some other things to try:

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Recommend using ISP DNS Addresses initially.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Thanks for the replies.
Personally I doubt the problem is with the router as prior to the APPLE Itouch update to ios5  it worked perfectly fine.
It was working this morning for a short time, I had left the router set to wireless g and for some reason it could find my location.  I changed it back to g & n  and it failed again, switched it back to g but to no avail..... yet

What wireless security are you using?
I would temporarily turn off security as a test to see if G and N mode and try single mode N as well to see if these modes connect with out security. Help narrow some things down.

tried it with and without security.
On the 655 it is pretty well a no go, I checked it this morning and the locating worked (set as g)  when I set it the way it had been working on the earlier itouch firmware, it lost the ability to locate, put it back to g..... still no go.... left it for an hour or so..... still nothing.  Switched back to my cisco g and immediately it located me.
Not blaming the 655  more so the itouch update

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

Also is WMM and SHORT GI enabled on the router? Try them off?

I think I remember someone posting some Beacon and Threshold values for iPhones and iPods. Might do a search on this forum or the DGL-4500 forum. I thought I remember someone saying that changing the values helped.

Did you try a different DNS?

But yea, if it was only after the update, have you tried the Apple forums? I bet others are having this issue.

With WMM and Short GI disabled   the Itouch loses complete connection with the Router

Just an update...  using the Dlink655

I installed Google map on the Itouch, it finds my location, an app I installed today called Mapme also can locate my position, an app called myradar can also locate my position,  just not the Map which is a function of the Itouch firmware...... still works fine on the Cisco G router.

Bearing in mind everything works fine when I install my cisco g router that's the kicker, but I am sure it's not the router because it worked before the update.

I really don't know the intricacies of the Itouch.

Any mapping app I have installed.... so far.... other than the map that is part of the firmware will locate me using the 655.

I might ventured that there is just some sort of incompatibility possibly between the iTouch and the 655 or something with the programming in the iTouch. You might try your iTouch out at a friends or familys place if they have a WiFi router and see.  :-\

I have been to the local coffee shops, micky D's anywhere else that has wi=fi and it works perfectly.

I would like to get hold of another 655 to see if it is just mine.

At my local computer shop, one of the kids there has a 655 and his girlfriend has the updated I touch, he is going to give it a try and get back to me.

I have another Cisco N router coming under a warranty replacement (the reason I got the 655) it will be interesting to see if that's OK
