Media server not working too well...
« on: October 24, 2011, 02:34:17 PM »

So I recently got myself a LG bluray player which has DNLA abilities. Hooked up to to the network with no issues. It finds the DNS320 as a drive and the DNS320 media server. Player media from the DNS when selecting the drive works with all files , but not in alphabetical order (or numerical with music). But if I use the media server, everything is in alphabetical order but most things don't play or even won't display the file.

I tried the bluray player over the windows 7 media server and this works 100%.. So I can only conclude something is wrong with the media server on the DNS320....

Any ideas?

PS I am running latest beta 2.02b firmware

Windows media server transcodes files on the fly, so should be able to play pretty much any video file that plays correctly on your PC.
The DNS 320 on the other hand doesn't really have to horsepower or codecs needed work this way, it simply streams the file itself over the network, so unfortunately it really depends on which formats your blu-ray player supports...

I could be totally off with this, but that's my understanding of how they work...
If your blu-ray player has a usb port, it might be worth sticking a selection of files onto a USB stick and playing them from that as a test - if they don't work that way, then you shouldn't really expect them to work over the network without first being transcoded.

Probably not the answer you were hoping for... Sorry!

I thought it might be a firmware thing. I am having the exact same problem streaming to my new samsung TV. Prior to the update there were no problems.

The codec and transcoding argument would be good, but the bluray player can access the DNS320 as a network drive and play everything I throw at it. Its only when accessing as a media server it struggles.

This made me conclude that the bluray player can play any format, but the media server part of the NAS is causing the problem with the way the bluray player sees the files.

PS Samsung TV's and Bluray players have issues with playing media files over DNLA . they are not very robust. LG's latest TVs and Blurays are probably the best as they will play most things chucked at them.

As I previously posted (topic=39052.0), the DNS-320 implementation doesn't stream Photos or Music to my Samsung UN46B8000XF Television. About the only thing I can get it to stream properly are .mpeg videos and even then the directories displayed on the TV are all messed up. D-Link Tech Support wasn't any help and referred me to Samsung. When I installed TWONKY media server on the DNS-320 TWONKY streamed the same Video's Photos & Music properly and the directory structure displayed on the TV matched the directory structure on the DNS-320.

Also, when I installed minidlna under UBUNTU and mapped to the DNS320, I was able to stream all those files to my TV.

This pretty strongly suggests to me that the problems we're experiencing result from the the DNS-320 DLNA server implementation and should be fixed by D-Link.

Fairly easy. I installed it and now I can play everything under the sun. I followed this

http://nas-tweaks.net/144/installation-of-twonkymedia-server-6-on-the-conceptronic-ch3mnas-and-the-d-link-dns-320-and-dns-343/

Latest version is 6.0.37 so just sub that it during the guide and that's it.

Hello
I'm sorry to write here about the DNS325 but i found anything at all on the 325 Forum.

I've installed twonkyserver and i didn't received any error message.
the ps-ef|grep twonky   shows me twonky is running ( stop and start are successfull)

Nevertheless, when i want to launch the webinterface (192.168.1.X:9000 or the same + "/config")
i receive an error (page not found)
NB = I use firefox
NB : Same re**** with IE
An idea ??
