Frustrated....Need assistance PLEASE!
« on: October 27, 2011, 10:49:22 AM »

OK, I've searched and searched and have since grown very frustrated.
I'm sure the porblem is something simple or even something I'm overlooking....
Anyhoo, here is the issue

We just recently moved into a new house.  Our old residence we had Cable Internet.
We now have DSL.  I elected to purchase the DSL modem myself.  The modem I have
is a Netgear DM111PSP.

When connecting the modem directly to my PC, I can access the internets without a problem.
I then try to connect my DGL 4500 and can not get online with it  ???

Here is everything I've tried.

Setting the IP's differently between the modem and the router.
Turning off firewall settings on the DGL
Reset......Reset....
Setting the connection type on both as DHCP (our ISP told us their connection type is DHCP)

I've done the above several times over not in any particular order.

Please advise!!  Thanks You all in advance!

Are you using the PPPoE or A settings under Internet/Manual on the router for DSL?
Find out what platform you need from your ISP. Usually it's PPPoE.

When I asked them prior to getting their service, they said that most DSL providers
use PPPoE and they stated several times that they use DHCP.  I've gone into the settings
on both the DGL as well as the modem and made sure nothing was set at PPPoE.  So
I've set everything to DHCP (Unless there is something I may have missed ?)

OK, So if the 4500 is set for DHCP, what does the STATUS/Device Info/Wan section say when connected to the modem?

How about swapping cables to test?

Be sure to power off both 4500 and modem. Power on MODEM first and let it sync, then power ON 4500.

Looks like, even though they call it a modem, that is no stand alone modem. It has both a firewall, and NAT. It will probably still work, but you will need to configure if to turn off the firewall and NAT. Check out page 23 of the manual.. Also check out page 57, make sure to turn off DHCP server. Also turn off UPnP..come to think of it, you may want to get another device. This is so close to being a router, all it is missing is the 4 port switch on the back. Other then that, its a router. And unlike heads,  two routers are NOT better then one. :-)

Oh, on page 64 there is a setting to change it to "modem only" What a pain in the neck. Why have all the other settings you turn off, and then end with that. How redudent. Yea.

Who is your ISP? Maybe I can check their support site and see what they suggest. Not many DSL ISP don't use PPPoE.

You guys Rock!!

I had no idea that this modem was so close to being a router.  I bought it at Best Buy
and it was one of only a few they had there.  As soon as I read your replies, I unplugged
the cables from the DGL and plugged the modem in and got logged into it.  I then got it
switched over to "Modem Only" mode, rebooted it and hooked the DGL back up.  Everything
is working now!!  #@$%^&* AWESOME!!  Thanks for all the help.  Had I seen the stoopid
mode setting about 3 day's ago......... :o

Anyway, a big THANK YOU for the assistance.  The thing is working just like it did
prior to our move.   ;D
