DIR-651only allows one or two wiireless clients
« on: October 29, 2011, 08:32:28 AM »

I have had trouble with my DIR-651 router since i bought it.   To put it simply, if there a device connected to the wireless network, no other device can connect.

Here are the devices i have:
hp pavilion running fedora 15
hp touchpad (webos)
htc thunderbolt (android)
dell inspiron  (?  work computer..not here right now) running windows xp

I am running wpa 2 using AES encryption in wireless mixed b/g/n mode(i have tried all other permutations of BGN without help.

On the devices that will let me see error logs, all i get is "authentication invalid" errors.

In a few rare cases, i am able to get a second device connected  by disabling the first device, connecting second, and reconnecting first.

I am running the newest firmware 1.10NA.

Thanks.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and WMM Enable under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

What HW version is your router?
A1
What FW version is currently loaded?
1.10NA
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Comcast cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Stand alone.
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Unknown model. Unrelated to issue as it occurs with modem disconnected.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
As mentioned above, I've tried all settings.

What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2?
As mentioned above, wpa 2 using AES encryption.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
one and only one of the following at a time.  The issue is i cannot have more than one wireless client
hp pavilion running fedora 15
hp touchpad (webos)
htc thunderbolt (android)
dell inspiron  (?  work computer..not here right now) running windows xp
<new>  ive had people bring there computers over.  Windows 7 does not appear to be able to connect at all.  windows XP behaves as the dell above (ie belongs to the "one client at a time" group)

Any cordless house phones?
Cell,  Issue happens when phone is off/in airplane mode.

Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Several, all using channels 1-3.  I have mine set to 10.  I've also tried other channels  with no change in behavior

Turn off Short GI and WMM Enable under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.
tried that for about a week.  Issue still occurs.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
yes

Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
No QoS active

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Always disabled

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Always enabled

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Basically have this already.

Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Yep

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Preferably not due to security concerns. I don't believe it is related to issue since it happens with no WAN connection (and therefore no routing being done)

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Not related to issue.

Also, here is a snippet of log for a failed connection attempt.
Nov  5 11:32:05 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is associated - 00:16:EA:7A:D9:A0
Nov  5 11:32:05 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: WPA2-AES PSK authentication in progress...
Nov  5 11:32:05 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is associated - 00:16:EA:7A:D9:A0
Nov  5 11:32:05 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: Open and authenticated
Nov  5 11:32:51 dlinkrouter user.warn kernel: wlan0: A wireless client is deauthenticated - 00:16:EA:7A:D9:A0

As mentioned before all logs point to authentication failure. the password IS correct.  My guess is a encryption handshake failure.

What happens if you use single mode G with out any security for a quick test? Does the devices connect correctly? What happens if you use Auto TPIK and AES together or TPIK alone?

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Basically have this already. Whats this mean? Have you set up reserved IP addresses on the router or not? It's recommended to set this up on the router so that each device gets it's own address everytime and helps in troubleshooting later on.

not 100% of the devices that connect to this router have static dhcp entries.  The ones i am testing this issue  with do though.

I've been doing more testing and it seems that the issue may come when a non-windows client maintains a WPA connection for a while(anywhere from 15 minutes to days), the router becomes unable to associate with any other wireless client until that one has disconnected.

I've also noticed that the repeatable absolute max number of wireless clients that can connect is 3.  typical max is 2,

As for the open G mode. It seems to work fine.  I cannot leave the network open for the period of time needed to reliably reproduce this issue for obvious reasons.

Sounds like a call is needed to DLink about this.
There isn't any newer FW as of yet and that initial release was 8.11.2011 so I presume there would be some on the horizon. I would get a hold of DLink and ask for an RMA if possible. Seems like this is a problem with the 651. If not, then I would get yourself in to a different model router. The 655, and 4500 are great routers too.

Keep us posted on how it goes.
