So I tried dropping my ext3 raid1 disks from my dns 323 into my new dns 325. Now neither NAS can access the data. They both read the drives and show normal, but the raid is never able to be read. I've been at this for 2 days trying all kinds of programs. Diskinternals has come the closest. If anyone else has anything they think will work I would appreciate. I've already tried about 7 ext file browsers.

thanks for the reply, but sadly none of those programs worked. The only way I seem to be able to even come close to accessing the array is through native linux environments, so I'm trying a technique I found through Ubuntu. If it works, I'll report back. I don't think I'll be using raid 1 anymore. It's almost as faulty as using 1 disk. If I could get a backup program to work correctly that would likely do it for me. I tried acronis and couldn't get a single backup to work. Always froze the computer.

The DNS-323 formats HDDs differently from the DNS-325, so HDDs are not interchangeable. It's likely the DNS-325 did something to the HDDs when you tried mounting them in that device.

What a nightmare, I'm still trying to get these files. I know this is a simple error and I have a feeling I know what caused it. I noticed the 325 overwrote some sort of config file, but it never fully took the raid array as it's own. Then the 323 couldn't read it anymore. Ubuntu and fedora can't read it either. I don't think I'll be using raid again. Even my trial of raid 0 didn't yeild better speeds. All this time I'm wasting trying to recover from this error could have been used for something more productive.

Using a program called Testdisk I was just now able to access the files. I copied over some small files to verify authenticity and they passed. Finally, it seems like this is over. The problem is, This was my biggest drive and now I have to find space for all this stuff across different hard drives.

Did you try just one drive and just proceed with degraded raid?
One significant difference between devices is DNS323 has directory structure /mnt/HD_a2 for main data while I think DNS325 is /mnt/HD/HD_a2
You can usually read disks if you you use a Linux boot disk (common on Magazines). Bit of googling enables mounting both NAS disk and Windows disk simplifying any transfer.

yes I did try that and it didn't work. There is some sort of hidden config file that the 325 wrote over when inserted and that seems to be what screwed everything up.
