help - freezing 30 seconds + every few minutes during playback
« on: February 13, 2009, 07:12:38 AM »

I have the DNS-321 with 2 Seagate 1.5TB drives installed (mirrored).

I've started to copy my mp3s over to the drive and have run into a problem.  Playback freezes for roughly 30 seconds every 2-3 minutes.  I've also tried to access the drive via explorer during this time and that's frozen too.  Everything else on the computer (i.e. web / other network connections / admin interface on the d-link router) is working normally when this happens.

I have a D-Link DIR-655 router (A3 1.21) and the DNS 321 has 1.01 firmware.

System temp is 113F/45C

This has been an amazingly frustrating experience.  First I find out that getting it to stream to an XBox 360 is nearly impossible, now I can't even seem to get it to do simple file streaming of mp3s to winamp or itunes.

What else can I look at that might be causing this??

Thanks

I have herd mention of these drives the 1.5TB's having an issue with streaming but I will have to look further into this to see if this issue the issue you are seeing.

What firmware do you have on the seagates?
If your firmware starts with SD, then you should upgrade to sd1a.
You're fine if your firmware starts with CC.

The seagates have caching issues that can only be resolved with a firmware update.

Ps. running 1.5T drives in raid 1 on both dns-321 and dns-323.

Interesting - one drive is SD17, but the OTHER drive is CC1H.

I'll call Seagate later today.  Will this wipe that SD17 drive of data?  If so, would I just put in the DNS-321 as if it were a new drive and let it rebuild the raid array?

-- update -- I waited for a while to get through to seagate, and lo and behold, they do have the link posted in their knowledgebase.  Updated the firmware and reinstalled it in the 321 and all data seems intact.

Now I'll give it some tests - hopefully this solves it!

How do you find out which firmware they are using? Can you figure it out without pulling them out of DNS-321?

Hello,

Do MP3s play perfectly fine on your system locally or do they have some skipping/latency also?

You have to goto the Seagate website and download the utility and plug the hard drive into your PC. I don't think you will need to format though it will just detect the firmware version on the drive connected.
