DNS-323 CANNOT ACCESS FILES BUT DRIVE IS VISIBLE
« on: November 06, 2011, 08:27:41 PM »

My 323 was in accessible... powered down, restarted, and then got that there were no drives installed.  Powered down, took off the front cover, made sure the drive was well inserted, powered on, and the system sees the drive, but when I try to access it, nothing is there.  In the system status, it shows the drive, shows the used space, free space, etc.  The drive light is blue, and not amber, so I'm guessing the drive is ok...

Anybody have any suggestions?

Power off, remove drive, place in USB caddy, attach to PC, boot PC from a live linux cd and check if you can see anything on the drive - using the live linux cd assumes you use windows in your PC.

If the drive is seen via linux you then have the chance of copying those that you added since the last backup.

You can then insert the drive back into the 323 and try reformatting it.  If you get a successful format, restore from backup and add the files you copied.  Make a complete new backup and you are in business again.

So it's potentially a glitch?

It could be, it could also be the herald of disk failure.

I had one disk that stopped working when it got hot.  Cooling it down in the freezer allowed me to copy the information off it.  It worked for another month after that but then gave out completely.

All I'm saying is be careful, it might be OK or it might not.

@skwees, have you run the Setup Wizard?  What were the setup options you selected?  What were the sizes of the disks?

Please keep us posted.

Peace

I had put it in as a 1TB JBOD.  No RAID...

wish me luck, I pulled the drive, have a hard drive enclosure and am about to try to USB plug it... Got a blu ray burner and two spindles of disks... going to be a fun weekend...
