DIR-655 & 1.30W Firmware - WiFi troubles
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:49:41 AM »

Hello!

Yesterday I brought my new router - D-LINK DIR-655, A5 1.30W (while in configuration page is A4).
It is a replace to my existing TP-LINK WR641G/642G (which works good).

After installation, I've encountered problems with WiFi connection. Download speed is half about than the potential. Pages loads slower, latency is higher. Plus, my connection drops regularly (2-3 mins). If I open P2P clients, surfing becomes insane (with my old router it worked much better).

None of this was with my older router. I would like to know - is this a firmware problem or it could be with hardware? Because I'm gonna to return it to the store.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Tried both.

Yes, WPA-Personal with Auto TPIK and AES.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
My PC with DWA-525 WiFi card, 2 notebooks, 2 iPad's and one iPod touch.

Any cordless house phones?
Yes, one base with 2 phones.

Any other WiFi routers in the area?
My old one is switched off while testing.

That's not the problem, it is on the router side, not my PC or other devices.

As I said, my PC is connected through WiFi to the router. I use wire only to make some special configurations, like changing firmware.

So wireless is failing on Single mode G?
How far way are the devices from the router when connecting?

These cordless phones, what frequency do they run on? Any of them near or on 2.4Ghz? These can cause problems.

To identify other wifi routers in the area, use InSSIDer application to see whos near by and what there routers you running, channels and modes. These can also have an effect on your routers operation as well.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

As I mentioned, I tried both modes - "Only G" and "Mixed G & N".

PC is about 10 m from the router, only one wall.

Need to check on that, but I don't think this is the problem. TP-Link is working, right? So there is no interference between this devices.

There is no other routers in the range. But I will check on that.

ADSL, stand alone ZyXEL P600 (only modem).

Done.

Now, it's not working at all, I can't access Internet, even the configuration page, from my PC.

What a piece of crap ..

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual. You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Copy and paste them in.
Any changes to the router you might want to reboot your PC.
What OS platform are you using?
If anything do a factory reset of the router and see if you can get it Internet again.

If your interested maybe someone could review your router setting with you via teamviewer

Problem solved. My store, where I brought DIR-655, changed it to a new one. Now it's working. Anyway, thanks for help.
