DIR 600 problem
« on: November 09, 2011, 10:11:06 PM »

I've been using my D-LINK 600 router for the past 2 months. And there is a problem that's been bugging me.

I'm not good with computers so forgive me for my not sounding too bright.

The problem is, whenever i open my router and my cable modem. I always have to switch my cable modem ON first, and let the internet connection load before i open my router. because when i don't, the router can't recognize the internet connection even after leaving them for 15-30mins. (i even tried it for 1-2 hours!) so the scenario is, my cable modem has connected to the internet and the DSL light is there. but the router doesn't detect it at all and still has an orange light on the internet icon (globe).

is it supposed to be like that? because it really bothers me that the router can't detect the internet from the cable modem when it is turned on late. and the task of switching the router off and on again each time this happens is really annoying and i know this shouldn't be happening.

i don't know what the problem is or even where it's coming from. my brother told maybe it's because of the ISP having a different IP address each time I turn the modem on, but I've already set the router settings to Dynamic IP. what could be the problem? any ideas?

Is the ISP modem have it's own router built in?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

If your on DSL, and the modem is in bridged mode, check the 600 router Setup/Internet/Manual and make sure the PPPoE settings are set for ALWAYS ON.

Some other tips:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

I'm using DSL. I searched the net and found that my ISP modem is a modem/router combo, it's model is Zyxel P-600. what should i do then?

My HW version is BX, FW is 2.05

Do DSL's have usernames/passwords? mine doesn't? I'm just using DHCP

I would call your ISP and ask them if they can help you bridge the modem so that it works just as a modem and let the 600 router do just that, route traffice as these routers have more features and work better then ISP modems.

i've accessed my Modem's WEB GUI and it says that the modem is Bridging! is there any other problem that's causing my router to act funny?

Ok, seems like the 600 router is getting a good public IP address from the DSL Modem and not a private IP address. Just making sure.

I looked at the status page of my router where I turned the modem ON late, about 10mins in this is what the router status is saying.

DHCP client connecting..... and 30mins in, it still can't connect to DHCP ergo no internet  :(

Not even a DHCP renew/release is available meaning it really can't connect. I don't know what to do anymore.
