About to Own a 4500 and I have a Few Questions
« on: February 14, 2009, 05:22:09 PM »

I Currently have a WRT310N  and I hate it.  Gone though 2 of them with the same issues.  Im sure it more the area i live in than anything.

I live in a neighborhood where everyone and the dog has a wireless setup. So There are conflicting issues. Most our house is wired so its not a huge issue till the wife and I use our laptops.  both our laptops have integrated 802.11g   We do not own anything with N yet, Im holding out for an N Standard before I commit.

Anyways..   My Questions are this.

1. How well does the Sharepoint work?  Id like to get rid of my loud DSM-G600_RevB wireless NAS, and just be able to hook up an external USB HD up.  We use this drive to share Pictures / and MP3s thats all it stores.

2. The Dlink TV deal on the main Product page said their is a SDK for the 4500 to be able to customize whats on the OLED.  Where is the SDK?  I cant seem to find that anywhere.  Id really love to be able to use this at the tournaments I host and Sponsor and put my Plasma Burn Name on it.

3. I see the Most common Complaint is Netflix streaming and the Router Resets under High Load.  I use XBOX for my Netflix Needs and we use it alot.   And when I host Lan parties and Do formal tournaments is the router going to reset in the middle of a match quite often?

4. Heat Issues.  The WRT310N I have now Stays SUPER hot. and its in an open area with proper ventilation.  Is the 4500 temperamental to heat issues like Linksys devices are?

5. Im partial confused on the 2.4 / 5Ghz radio signals.  Who transfers on what? So like in my house all we use is 802.11g  I didnt think G went up to 5ghz? I could be wrong though.  If it does how can I Utilize this and hopefully solve the issue of everyones router in my neighborhood conflicting with mine. (yes ive use auto channel and manually tried each channel with the same results using channel 7 now on my wrt310n and it seems to have the best results)

Those are my Main questions for now.  If someone could lead me to the SDK for the OLED Screen stuff I could make quite a bit of stuff once i get motivated.  Takes me a bit to motivate myself to program at home as its what I do at work all day long.  I just ordered the 4500 from newegg its on sale for 134 bucks so I see that as a good deal as most places still charge 175 to 199 still for a router thats well over a year or more old.

Thanks and I hope to Frequent this board more often once I get my Router in.

1) Shareport works great.  I rarely use it since getting an Apple Time Capsule, since nothing worked for the Mac yet. It's fast, and easy, and anyone can use it.

2) DLink TV is old.  That's what they had planned, but remember, plans get broken...very easily.  You aren't able to customize the OLED.  i doubt we will ever see that now.

3) Netflix doesn't seem to be working properly right now.  Router has been under high load from me for some time now...doesn't reset at all.  Just make sure you have it standing up right to get proper ventilation.

4) No heat issues.  Yeah, it does get hot, but NOT super super hot as when it was laying down.  If you stand it up right, it'll be just fine.  If it does lay flat, the bottom will heat up, and surely cause reboots and other problems.  I've really never ever had any heat issues with my devices...even Linksys.

5) The wireless has the option to run on either 2.4 GHz, or 5 GHz.  Not simultaneously however.  2.4 GHz ONLY supports wireless N, wireless G, and wireless B respectively.  5 GHz ONLY supports wireless N and wireless A. So, no...G does not go up to 5 GHz.  Auto channel is bad, and to avoid interference use either 1, 6, or 11...gotta set it manually!  There's other tips too, so you won't have problems... Antenna placement is another big one. Interference can be caused by literally anything.  As we have discovered, 2.4 GHz is best indoors, while 5 GHz "N" and the likes are best in outside environments.  It doesn't have the best penetration like the 2.4 band.

Hope this helps...

Netflix is kinda  dealbreaker for me.   We use it alot. Is there a Particular version that is confirmed that works with Netflix?  Ive read maybe 1.12?  Any ETA to if and when Dlink will fix the issue?

Ok I was able to place the 4500 on hold. NewEgg Great people!

So Question is..  Since there will be no SDK for the OLED.  almost no since in getting it for the OLED right?  So Would the 825 be a better choice?

If I understand correctly

4500 = Semi-Dual Band /w OLED
825 = True Dual Band  w/o OLED

and thats the only difference between the routers?

I have had the router for about 7 months, Netflix is a definite deal breaker! Even before that I had tons of problems while file transfering that router would just reset, not just a connection reset, like a full on turned off, and turned back on. What ever rev of the firmware, it has major issues, don't buy. It really is a nice looking router, it just seems to me someone took a shortcut at beta testing, or programming and you have product that should be a 10 out of 10 but it ended up a 7 out of 10.

825 is a great router too.  It has it's fair share of problems as well.  Yes, it does have concurrent 2.4 and 5 GHz, unlike the 4500, which can only use 1 at a time.

Lycan, one of the moderator's here said they are looking into the Netflix problems.  I'm sure there are some small work arounds to get it to work properly.

The DGL-4500 is a fine router.  You can always test it and return it.  I do however prefer the 4500 over the 825, or even the 655.  Just my 2 cents.

AS much as I want to keep the router, this is my scenario. Customer care on the phone for D-Link helpful, but never heard of Netflix, and told me to call Microsoft, outsourced CS of course. Second called LG they told me to call D-Link, and my ISP. My ISP told me call D-Link, and LG, so you see everyone is pawning off a solution to someone else.  ???  I tried streaming with a Samsung 2550, same problem straight from the ZyXel modem, works great on both, so it is definitely the DGL-4500.

I hate the u-verse gateway, thats why i got the D-link and put it in the DMZ so now it does all my wireless routing for me. However i needed the u-verse box to supply tv and phone. Second about all your concerns with the 4500 If you don't need the packet prioritizing then go with the other model, I personally love the d-link 4500 I have only one problem with it that i hope to resolve soon via these forums.

Netflix streaming does slow down but i tend to think thats a netflix deal as it presented the same behavior on the u-verse gateway.

Heat : now this is interesting when i went to go get this router the only one they had out on the best buy floor was sort of in a beat up box, but it was the only one left and i needed a router, upon getting it home i found that some components were missing so same day i brought it back, and they looked in the back room for a replacement, they eventually found one and i took that home, the replacement had a heat problem upon plugging it in for the first time to set it up it became very hot to the touch, didn't think too much of it at the time that is until it shut itself off, back to best buy .... another exchange later and i have the one I am using now, but this one is a champ it has been up and running for about a month no restarts no dropped games nothing, its the least stress (with the exception of the exchanges) i have ever had owning a router.
