« on: November 11, 2011, 03:20:50 PM »

So what is more important, a modem or a router?
I have a motorola 3327 4 year old modem/router combo and thinking about buy Dlink router.
But do i need to upgrade the modem as well or the new router will be doing all the work?

A router is needed if you want to network more than 1 computer in your network.  A router also helps assist in keeping people out, aka firewall (If it's configured correctly).

You don't need to upgrade your modem, unless you need a new model (DOCSIS 2 to DOCSIS 3 for speed increase).

If you are running more than 1 computer in your LAN, then both are important.  If you need more specific answers, then ask away. I stayed very basic due to me not knowing what information you are after.

Motorola 3327? Are you sure thats your model? Don't see it on file with Motorola.

As for your question, not sure how to answer. The modem establishes the internet connection with your ISP, the router distributes that internet connection to the computers in your network. A modem with no router will still get one computer online, and a router with no modem will still network your computers together, they just won't be online. If your buying a new router, then yes, you will have to buy a new modem, or somehow set the modem/router combo to bridge/transparent mode. Have you thought about just buying a newer modem/router combo?

First, i have a few problem. Im going through Qwest internet and they finally admitted that they're having problem with their server being overload so im not getting the speed i should be getting, which is 12mb and im getting 5mb(check it at speedtest.net).  I also share it with two other roommate and when they're on the computer, i get less than 1mb and 255 ping.
Yes i thought about buying a modem/router combo, but i have a friend who is a network tech, he told me that there is some modem that will limit other user so i can have more bandwidth.
So, any suggestion?
Im trying to get any speed boost that i can out of it, so is that a modems job or the routers?
Whats DOCsis2 and 3?
Sorry to bomb you guys with so many question.

Well I always suggets a seperate modem and router. But if you go that route, be sure you modem is ONLY a modem. I would usually suggest a D-link modem here, but I went through their inventory, and the closest I could find to a stand alone DSL modem is DSL-2320B which still had firewall settings, so I can't recommend it.  Another option is the TP-LINK TD-8616. Though you still have to put that in bridge mode. Once done though, you should be given a public IP and you can use PPPoE, or what ever your standard is.

Now if this is too complex for you (which I can understand) you could go with the ZyXEL Q1000z sold by Qwest. That way they could install it for you. You would still need to tweak it, but would be easier then setting up a modem and router all yourself.

No problem, my friend will help me set it up.  So the modem you mention, will it give me a speed boost?

Hard to say. It does offer ADSL2+, which your old device does not, but I am not sure if your ISP even supports it. Overall,  Probably won't see much of a difference if your ISP is saying there is a problem on their end. Fraggboy was talking about DOCSIS, which is a different internet type, and doesn't apply to you.

You can prioritize traffic which works in the same manor, it sures everyone can get internet while others are online and gaming or streaming. Dlink doesn't offer any bandwidth limiting features on there routers.

Yes, dd-wrt is a way to go. And if your friend has done it before, get him to help. Here are the D-link routers which are compatible. Good luck

Just be aware that loading non-OEM Firmware will void your warranty should you need any DLink support.

Oh yea, thanks for throwing that out there Furry, should have said that. And more over, its not for the novice, so I wouldn't recommend it unless your friend has done it before. Or at the very least, expect some headaches.

Here is a demo for anyone wanting to see what they are getting into:  http://www.dd-wrt.com/demo/

It unlocks a LOT of options which is great!  But, like others have said, be careful!!
