Ready to buy another wireless router... any final thoughts?
« on: November 12, 2011, 06:22:44 PM »

I've had a DIR 655 for about 2 years now but the last few months its been driving me nuts.  I have to constantly reset the thing.  This might be due to wireless or wired connections.  (We don't use wireless connections that often - both are susceptable.)

I was thinking of trying a firware update - and if that fails it goes in the trash.  (I've been told not to update in the past - unless the firware fixes specific problems that I might have.  It not seem to...  LOL!  At least I did not see "Solves resetting the router daily" anywhere in the bug-fixes!) :-)

I know I'll have a pile of questions thrown my way - but consider this:  I've been using it the same way for the past 2 years... so does the kind of security I'm using, or the type of wireless I'm using, or the devices on my network, etc.... really matter?

Seems like I wore the thing out...

These things should last more than 2-3 years.

What Hardware version is your router?
What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and WMM Enable under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.

Some other tips:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

FurryNutz:  LOL!  Did you even read my post?

Here is a question to you:  what does any of that matter, if it was all working fine for a year and a half and now it doesn't?

The only thing I've changed recently is that I set my wireless to only N type rather then auto...  but I changed that after I started having reliability issues and I've read here that there are problems...

BTW:  Turning off features - in particular security related ones- is not a solution.

FYI...  FW: 1.21

Ya we read the posts man. I posted questions and suggestions to you not for my health either. There are reasons for asking further questions. If your unwilling to answer and try them then we cannot get a better picture if your situation and help give you better answers and suggestions. Just because the router isn't working doesn't' mean it's the routers fault. We need to dig deeper and find the problem. Wireless can be impacted by other things like other routers. Help us help you. If your unwilling to answer a few questions or do some of the suggestions then I'll recommend you call DLink and ask for there help.

What kind of answer where you looking for? The data you gave was:

1. It resets
2. It worked before
3. It's 2-3 years old.

You never know what info might be helpful. And as for data goes, you can never have too much.

FurryNutz:  Yea... buddy I'm not a newbie.  I get it.

Whenever I read your posts, you ask the *exact* same questions - and they are typed exactly the same - so you must copy/paste them into just about every question that comes up on this forum.  If you *really* read my post, you would have noticed I asked about wheter the latest firmware might solve this problem... if you don't know one way or another, that really is OK... :-)

Hard Harry:  I was asking about the firmware update because I've tried just about everything else. (In anycase everything in the Furry Nuts list.) To be honest, unless I got an emphatic "no", I was going to give the new firmware a test - and if that fails, just move on to something else...

I also have numerous saved configuration files dating back 18 months at least ...and tried a number of them.  Usually within a few days I have to turn off/on or reset the router...

At some point, my time is worth much more than a new router cost...  the proof in the pudding will be to try another router and if in the *exact same LAN and RF environment* -  it works -  then the router is usually at fault.

I have been running the 1.35NA firmware on my A2 without any issues.  I installed the 1.35NA the day it came out.  Routers are electrical devices and do fail, I would try the 1.35 and see what happens.

We basically have..5-6 people answer every question on every thread on this board, and Furry does a LARGE portion on the work so yea, your going to get some copy/pasta.  I just pop in here and there and answer the fun and interesting questions, he does all the brunt work. If you want some more personality in the replies, feel free to answer some of the other people questions. There are about 6 above you right now. :-)

As for you question, I honestly didn't understand what you were looking for. Seems you were looking for experiences of certain firmware, and looks like you got a answer, so cool. Good luck.

Furry's questions are necessary to drill down a problem.  That aside, your problems may be related to power fluctuation or noise, HEAT building up in router, new electronics in your, or your neighbors home.  I would plug in your router to a different power circuit, clean your router venting and position it so air flows completely around it.
