DNS-320 - Converting to RAID 1 & USB HDD Questions
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:44:26 AM »

This post was originally located in the "Firmware Wishlist" and was subsequently split off to a new post.

Hello,

just 2 quick question (i hope that's allowed in this thread):

First:
I have installed 1 HDD as standard type in my DNS-320. Some time later i want to add a brand new unformated HDD with the same capacity and make the 2 HDDs as RAID 1. Of course the data on the first HDD shouldn't get deleted. Will the following bug prevent me from doing that or did i missunderstood the description? -
Bug - Fix RAID1 "upgrade" when adding a new drive (see topic: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=38321.0). Issue may result from inspecting the HDD format from ffp

Second:
I connect an external HDD to the usb port of my DNS-320. Then i want all data that's saved on my DNS-320 to be backed up on the external HDD. Will the following bug prevent me from doing that or did i missunderstood the description?
Backup - Designate USB HDD as the target destination for the integrated "Local Backup" functionality

I would be delighted if someone could answer my questions. I hope my questions aren't too stupid. If that's not the right place for my questions then please point me to the right one.

Sorry for my bad english by the way.

Best regards,
Beryus

The backup functionality in the DNS-320 will not permit a USB storage device as the backup destination. This is not a bug, but a "feature request".

In the sticky post it's assumed to take 2 new HDDs. In my case i just want to add 1 HDD. But I read your sticky post and got an idea. Could it be possible to install the brand new HDD, format it as standard type, move the old data from the old to the new HDD, remove all partitions and stuff from the old HDD and then make RAID 1. Or is that also not possible?

I am that curious because that's the only important thing for me that the Synology DS211j (DS212j) can do and the DNS-320 not. I prefer to buy the DNS-320 because of it's low cost but if it can't do the stuff i asked then i have no real choice.

Best regards

I believe the instructions on that sticky also apply to your situation. If you insert an unformatted HDD, you should be provided with an option to configure the new HDD as RAID 1.

Make sure you backup your data to another physical storage device before performing this procedure in case the procedure fails. Additionally, RAID 1 is not a backup, so if you're data is valuable, you should create a backup anyway to protect your data.

Please post your results.
