Would like an expert opinion
« on: November 28, 2011, 06:14:42 PM »

But I thought I would try here first. Just kidding. I have the DIR-655 HW version 3. Firmware version 1.21. My system has gotten really slow lately, and there has been nothing added lately to account for it. I have a desktop and a printer hooked up seperately with an ethernet cable. Wireless, I have 2 laptops, PS3, and a Wii. Lately it has been so bad that I have had to tell my son to quit playing his playstation while I shopped online. I haven't had to do that before. Here are my wireless lan settings:

Wireless Radio :Enabled.
802.11 Mode : 802.11g only .
Channel Width :20MHz.
Channel :9.
WISH : Active .
Wi-Fi Protected Setup :Enabled/Configured

My question is this. What can I look for in my settings or configuration that would give a hint about what is going on? If you need any other info, please just ask.

edit: My router is line of sight to almost all of the devices using it. The laptops are generally about 20 feet or less from the router.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem brand and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options. However you may need to enable this for the PS and your PC while he's gaming so that when he's online and gaming, you and the PC can still get Internet.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Try mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Disable Short GI and Extra WiFi Protection.
I would turn off Protected WiFi and Wish.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Teamviewer.com.

Thanks for the reply Furry. I will check these settings tomorrow. It's getting a little too late tonight. I will post what I find.

Thanks again

FW 1.21 is ok, FW 1.33NA  and FW 1.34NA are better for mixed devices.  I use FW 1.31RU for my A4 US model.  The fw 1.31RU uses English.

You have a mixed of devices like mine.  I set my dir-655 with mixed n/g/b and auto 20/40 Mhz.  In order to handle a mixed of devices, the mixed n/g/b and auto 20/40 Mhz would put the full gear design of this router on the high speed transfer rate.  Channel 9 is close to channel 6 and channel 11.  Most electronic devices designed to use the frequency close to channel 6.  I prefer to use channel 11 or channel 1 to stay away from channel 6, the interference from other electronic devices.  You may need to disable the QoS to open up the bottle neck of the router, the router would operates in the MIMO mode to open up the bottle neck of the bandwidth.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Centurylink DSL
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
Embarq 660 stand alone I think
What ISP Modem brand and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some of the following I could not do because I don't have the option/they are not in my configuration options.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Not an option
Turn off QoS options. However you may need to enable this for the PS and your PC while he's gaming so that when he's online and gaming, you and the PC can still get Internet.
I did this, it seemed to help some.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Not an option
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Did this, but turned it back off. Seemed to slow things down.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Did this with the laptop I am on, this really seemed to help.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
I think they all are, not sure how to check
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.
Did this, also seemed to help.
Try mixed G and N?
Everything I have right now is g, getting a new laptop tomorrow with n. will change.
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
These were set correctly.
Disable Short GI and Extra WiFi Protection.
[color=blueDid this, did not hurt performance[/color]
I would turn off Protected WiFi and Wish.
Did this, Not sure if it helped, didn't hurt

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Teamviewer.com.
Not sure what this is, but if I keep having issues, will try.

Thanks again for the help. I will let you know how it is doing again soon. Also, do you think I need to update my firmware? I am still using 1.21. If so, which version would you reccommend?

Thanks for your time

The EMbarq 660 I think has a built in router. At least from doing some researching on it here:
Embarq-660
One way you can test this out is to look at the Status/Device Info/Wan section on the router and see if you are seeing a 192.168 address for the WAN IP Address, if so then your getting a private IP address from the modem. It's preferred to bridge the Modem. If your not seeing a 192.168 address and your getting a ##.##.###.### format IP address then the modem is probably bridged correctly or is a stand alone modem.

You can check to see if your devices are set up for Auto Obtain in the Control Panel/Networking/Adaptor your using, i.e. wired or wireless/Properties. Look at the TCP/IP or IPv4 check box entry and review the properties of it. You should see Auto Obtain. Most PCs are set to this by default anyways unless someone has changed it.

If you only have devices that use G the set the router for single mode G. If your getting a new device with N capabilities then set for Mixed G and N on the router. Theres not need to broadcast modes that you don't use like A and B.

As for FW updates, lets see if we can get you going well first before updating FW. This is an option however I believe the issue lies in making some configuration changes that well work well for you. FW updates might not be helpful in this case.

Keep us posted.
