SMART test drive fail and RAID 1

I have a new DNS-320. I purchased an additional 1 TB Hitachi hard drive and tried to format it as a RAID 1. The RAID 1 configuration completed after a second try (and firmware upgrade) but it was labled as degraded. I did a SMART test and it said that the Hitachi drive had failed. I returned the failed drive but was informed that the drive was fine and had been formatted.

I took it back home reinserted it and checked rebuild. It rebuilt and showed current RAID type Volume_1 : RAID 1(completed) no mention of volume 2.

I did another SMART test and it still showed the Hitachi as failed.

What does all of this mean? Thank you for your assistance.

Why would there be a Volume_2 - I assume you know what RAID1 is.

When you installed the new hard drive You did follow the instructions in the manual and allowed it to format *both* drives as RAID1.  If you didn't then you need to make a backup of your data and then let the DNS-320 format the drives as RAID1 - then you can restore your data.

At the moment it would appear you have something like JBOD and not RAID1.

I was asking about the second drive because after the RAID configuration completed 2 drives were still showing up in explorer. The other one dissappeared after I rebooted though. Bad call on my part, sorry.

I did follow the instructions when formatting both the hard drives as RAID 1 the first time. The second time I followed the instructions to rebuild the RAID. 

The SMART test still says the Hitachi failed though. There is no data on the drive yet. What is the best way to proceed now?

Do I start over, Just insert the Hitachi and see if I can get it to format by itself before trying to build the RAID? Fry's tested the Hitachi and said it was fine but the SMART test still says it failed.

I am not sure how best to proceed.

Hi,
Probably a silly idea, but since you have no data on the drives, could you try switching the drive locations in the 320.  Just out of curiosity to see if the same drive is detected as having failed.  This might give you a clue as to either the drive being bad or something with the 320's sata connection.  The only other thing I might try is to remove both drives, put them in your windows machine and completely remove the partitions and then insert them in the 320 as bare drives.  Good luck
