Can't see device on network
« on: December 01, 2011, 04:09:50 PM »

I suspect a failure of the NIC in this device.
It has been working fine [2x1TB RAID1], but now cannot be seen on the network at all [attached to a Netgear Router]
The drives sound like they spin up OK, just cant connect to anything on the device via windows and cannot connect via the web interface. Also can't ping the assigned IP Address. The router interface does not show it as an attached device.

I can confirm that other devices can be connected to the ethernet ports on this router and function OK.

My questions:
1. how do I go confirm that it is a component failure with the 323's network interface?
2. if so, can this be repaired or am I up for a new device?
3. what is the best way of lifting data off one of the drives?

many thanks in advance.

1)  Is the ethernet link light on the DNS-323 on?
2)  Have you tried a new cable?
3)  Have you tried a "hard" reset?

The easiest way to get your data is to restore it from a backup - assuming you have one.  Failing that, you can connect the drive to a PC running linux or windows with an installable file system driver.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

tried a working cable - yes.
not sure which is the ethernet light - will have to find the manual.
have powered down completely. is this the same as a hard re-set?

I have backups of the essential stuff, but thought that if the drives were ok, then should be able to get everything.

it's sounding like time to buy a new one.

One more troubleshooting step. Try connecting the DNS-323 to a different port on your router/network.

The ethernet link LED is the one between the hard drive LEDs - powering down completely is a "re-boot" - to reset it you push & hold the reset switch on the rear panel.

Under certain circumstances it is possible for a user to set the network speed to 1GB and get "locked" out, or, to set a static ip and then forget it or change the network address - resetting the unit returns it to an "out of box" condition (except for the disk configuration & data - these will not be changed)

Ok, thanks to everyone for their replies. I really appreciate it.

Here's the latest situation:

* tried different cables and different router ports.
* did a hard reset via a paperclip in the back pinhole
* tried connecting the lan cable directly to a laptop rather than the router - It's Windows 7 Ultimate and I'm not sure if any OS config was needed to see attached devices like this.
* ran the easysearch utility and also tried the default IP address of 192.168.0.32.
* all the front lights on the device look normal.
* when connected to the router, the activity light for that port occasionally blinks.

But, it's all to no avail. There's still no connection to this device or recognition of it on the network

Would you guys agree that it's stuffed?
Also, would you agree that it would be cheaper/wiser to source a new device rather than attempt to have it repaired?
If I get a new device, will it recognise the existing RAID 1 configuration or would I need to format and start again?
Is it possible that an electrical storm may have caused this problem, given that the drives seem to spin up ok and there is occasional drive activity in the unit?

Again, many thanks for any feedback.

Addressing your questions. . .

  • Assuming you are sticking with D-Link, newer two-bay ShareCenter models with greater functionality and improved AFD support are available (DNS-320 and DNS-325) that cost in the $100 to $175 range
  • The cost of fixing your DNS-323 vs. the cost of a newer model ShareCenter speaks for itself (IMHO)
  • Unfortunately, the DNS-320 and DNS-325 do not recognize the DNS-323 filesystem, so you'll have to create a new RAID 1 array and port your data over. If you were to purchase a replacement DNS-323 and your original RAID 1 array is undamaged, then the replacement unit should recognize the array without issue
  • An electrical surge is capable of damaging the the DNS-323, but whether this has actually happened is difficult to determine
