Limit Folder Access ?
« on: December 02, 2011, 01:56:42 AM »

I have my new DNS-320.
I want to give some of my friends access to certain folders on volume_1 via FTP.
I only want some to see the DOCS folder and others the WORK folder.
I have read and re-read the manual, I can only see how to give them access to the entire volume ???
The blurb on the Dlink website states this is possible, what am I missing ?

Ok,
Setup Groups and a user account.
Limited the user to that group.
Group is set to one folder.
Setup a dlinkddns account.
I can login via the web interface using that account,
but can't map the FTP drive.

Also, I changed my admin password from the standard for security
and now windows7 won't let me map the share on my desktop.

The Pogoplug was so much easier in some respects...

Managed to get FTP mapping resolved for my friends.
Dlink have been NO help whatsoever.
Documentation is terrible, I've had to trawl the web to get a clue.

Now mapping volume_1 in Win7 is impossible, it just keeps bouncing me back to the user/password dialogue.
I even created a new account in the admin panel and tried mapping the drive using that.
Just the same.

I experienced the same thing.  I just kept changing the passords for my user groups and rebooting the NAS and my PC it eventually took.  I think one of the last thing I tried before the connect took was doing a \\sharecenter     (or whatever name you called it during configuration).  Running Win 7, 64 bit.  I got some tips in my thread.

sorry for my English. :P

I think I understand that:
If I have
Volume_1/PHOTO
Volume_1/VIDEO
Volume_1/PERSONAL

if  I want to share with friends the PHOTO folder
I have to share everything to all (Reset Network Shares) or
set the owners for every single folder.

There is no distinction between home  LAN and sharing with the internet (browser interface).
I can not restrict access to a subfolder and give him access to the folders above.
example:
I would like to share with friends only PHOTO folder without configuring each PC of my LAN. It is not possible.

Once you set a main folder, the subfolders have the same rules.  To do something very similar, I only have two users.  An admin and guest.  Bascially I want control over everything on the volumes (admin) and everyone else is classified as guest and has read only access of only the media.

Go into account management setup your 2 users.  Then go into account managment network shares then press new.  Using the checkboxes you will set two rules:

1.  Volume_1 for the admin select read/write (it will include all folders and subfolders)
2.  Volume_1/Photo for the guest select read (for only the photos).

Since everyone else will be logging in as a guest they will only see what is in the photo and photo subfolders.  Since you will be logging in as an admin, you can read/write to everything on Volume_1.

As far as sharing outside your Lan I use FTP (not web tools) and the account management tool allows you to select FTP access with the user rules.  You might want a third user and setup what all FTP can read/write too.  For me, the FTP is the same as the guest rules.

yes, but if I do it I can't create (from Win) subfolder under Volume_1.
I have to create and then share from interface of NAS.
ok it's a small compromise. thanks

nas in raid1

map structure: volume_1--->private
                                        public

groups: admin+guests
Users: time machine, admin (thats me) + guest

nowhere in any menu i can give the guest group or guest user only access to the public map only.
i can choose  between the read write/read options or deny.
