DIR-655 internal network OK, no internet
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:11:29 AM »

Hi

My router just dropped the internet. I checked with ISP and confirmed that their modem is fine - I can connect direct into that - but the DIR-655 won't connect externally.  I've tried wireless and wired and can connect fine to the router, but it is like the firewall has reset itself or something.

Any ideas?  at the moment I'm surviving thanks to a 30m long ethernet cable to the modem going out the window and round the house!

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 or 5e recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

H/W B1
Firmware 2.0
Cable
Stand alone Virgin cable modem
Connecting cable swapped already

Have checked the Advanced tab and see that Firewall settings were restricted. Have changed to endpoint independent and will see what happens - need to reconnect to try!

Check the Status/Device Info/Wan section. WAN IP address, gateway and DNS should be filling in. Keep us posted.

Yep, that fixed it. Don't know why the firewall settings changed themselves without warning, but changing them to endpoint independent restored my internet access.

Unless there is something about this that should concern me (i.e. how did the settings change?), then I'm a happy bunny!

Does any one have access to the routers web pages?
Have you set up a admin PW for the web page and wireless PWs?  ???
Save off the routers configuration to file too for back up.

Glad its working.
