655 stopped working for some games
« on: December 06, 2011, 06:47:41 PM »

Hey,

I've had the dir655 for about a year now, and no problems at all, until about a week ago. I went into a couple of online games (Bad Company 2 and World of Tanks) and would have a low ping showing in the game, but every 10-15 seconds, especially in areas with a lot of action, I would get large amounts of lag, making the games unplayable.

I would be unable to move or keep getting 'teleported' back 20 feet. I looked into it maybe being the servers, steam in the case of bad company, or my internet provider, but regular internet actions are not affected at all. After searching for a while tweaking settings, turning off antivirus and firewalls, it made no difference.

I finally today plugged my modem directly into my pc instead of leaving it on wireless, and all the problems go away. All packet tests and connection tests to my router have come back with no errors. Again, I have never had a problem just browsing the web or watching videos, and usually get more speed on speedtest.net than my provider even advertises. I also upgraded the router firmware.

I tried going into my router settings and doing all I could (as I understand it) to have exceptions, port forward, and even did the one thing (can't remember what it's called) where you add one ip address that will have no limitations put on it by the router, and none of this has made it work.

SO... I'm wondering, as this just recently came up, is there something wrong with my router? Maybe my computer's adapter? (though checking that windows says it's fine, and I would assume that I wouldn't have any internet if it was)

Can I fix it? or is the router garbage? Any help is appreciated.

Is this the only device you are using while online? Any other devices online?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

If you have more the one devices online, you might have to set up some QoS rules.

Yes, generally it's the only device in use when I'm playing the games. I don't use any peer to peer programs either.

I did all of those things after reading a lot of your responses, the only one I don't think I did was the firewall stuff, I don't know where that is.

Firewall is under Advanced/Firewall.
Recommended settings is Endpoint Independent for both.

If you are playing multiplayer games using wireless , you will see lag.  Try hooking up wired to the router and you will see a big difference.

Turning the firewall to endpoint independent for both has now made my internet slower, doing a speedtest shows it's about 1/3 of where it was.

and davevt31, I've had the router for a year now and this is the first time I've had any issues with lagging.
It's only in certain games, a couple are doing this, and a couple of other games have no problems at all. The games that are doing it I've also had for a year, which is why I don't understand this suddenly happening, I didn't change any settings.

You can also check out the gameing and gamefuel sticky for some examples on using QoS.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using?  Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

I did all that, using N, and every time I change settings on it it seems to get slower. Was getting 14+ mbps on websites even when I started having the gaming issues, now I'm getting 3 if I'm lucky.

I've reset the router a couple of times and tried setting it all up again and it's the same result. What I don't understand is why it all of a sudden is doing this and why I should have to suddenly change all these settings in the first place, when it worked fine for 11 months the way it was.

Getting 14+mbps now with the pc plugged directly to the modem, so it's definately not my ISP.

I'm probably just going to end up buying a new different kind of router, because this is ridiculous and I'm pretty fed up with it.

Any neighbors in your area that have wireless ? More and more people are getting into wireless and more wireless routers can interfere and impact wireless router performance.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.
