Speed is half what it should be (wired)
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:32:12 AM »

Installed the router today, replacing a crappy Trendnet cheapo wireless router that the ISP gave us last year when we signed up.

I'm on a 50mbps connection and I always used to get exactly that with the cheap trendnet thing. I was tired of that piece of crap that kept crashing and finally died today, so I figure lets get a decent router with the DIR-655....

I have turned QoS off. D/L speed still 19-19.5mbps. Turned off wireless completely, speeds went up to 25mbps. Halfway there but I'm out of things to turn off...

Firmware is 2.00RU (I live in Moscow most of the time and they apparently use a non standard L2TP here and it wouldn't connect at all to the internet until I flashed it)

Intel Gbit NIC, shows connected at 1 GB/s. Bit silly that it struggles to get to half the speed the old cheap thing used to get...any ideas?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Swap out cables.
Ensure cabling from ISP into the building is good up to the ISP modem.
Do you see the same speeds while directly connected to the ISP modem?

Somethings to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Some things to try for wireless:
What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and Extral Wireless protection.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Thanks for the extensive reply FurryNutz!

First 3 questions I probably need to answer N/A, we have ethernet to the building here.
Basically there's an ethernet cable sticking through the wall, and all I need is to let the router login to the ISP via L2TP protocol without any modems being involved.

I basically swapped the trendnet out to the DIR-655 not changing any cables.

DNS addresses are not being used in the internet setup...my ISP requires them all to stay 0.0.0.0 in their manual. (this was the same for the previous router)

I will try your suggestions first thing in the morning, time to hit the rack now!

Will check into the wifi questions you asked in the morning as well, but I had 0 wireless devices connected at the time I was doing speedtests.

Thanks again! Much appreciated.

Wondering if a DAP would be more preferred in your situation with your ISP. Is it possible they are maintaining routing and host responsibility and maybe you could just connect an AP and or a network switch for wired devices instead of using a router.

Keeps us posted.

Tried the settings today, most of them were already set to what you advised, but the ones I did change did not seem to have a noticeable effect on wired speeds. The only thing I wasn't able to try was to unplug the other computers from the router but they were all off or standby anyway.

Managed to flash the old trendnet today and it worked OK with wireless off. Put it in there and speeds immediately went back to what they used to be.

Also the DIR-655 seems to lose connection to the internet VERY regularly. Sometimes after 30 mins, sometimes after 3 hours but it will "hang" as in not be able to automatically reconnect. The trendnet seemed to do this every few days which was annoying but not as annoying as every couple of hours obviously.

I'm going to see if I can return this thing, I don't think it's going to be a satisfying experience :(

And the ISP does require a router unfortunately. I should've bought one of the ASUS ones the ISP sells in their webshop, but since I couldn't wait for it to be delivered (home office) I had to run into the nearest shop (where I was forced to pay a ridiculous 200$ for the 655 to add insult to injury)

How about running a external switch off the old router?
Sorry that the 655 doesn't seem to be working out.
Only other thing to try would be a FW update.

Hope you find something that works.

That's what i'm doing now, the ISP gave us the switch when they installed everything, normally it was used before the router to send a LAN cable to the digital TV decoder. I've unplugged the TV now and put the switch behind it, but it's not an ideal solution since I'm currently lacking wireless. That's OK for emergencies but in the long run I do need the wireless. Was considering configuring the 655 as an access point but I'll try to return it first since that's one expensive access point otherwise.

I already flashed it to 2.00 to get it to work, the only one newer that was on the FTP was a beta firmware.

Thanks for the help!!!! :)

Wow, spendy price for this unit.
Good luck with what you get next.
