Dir-655 slow speeds
« on: December 07, 2011, 04:06:48 PM »

I am having to reset my DIR-655, by pushing the button on the back of the router, about ever week and a half to 2 weeks, because my internet is at a snails pace.  Once I reset it, it goes back to speed I am accustomed to.  Then about 2 weeks later it slows again.  Then I repeat the process of resetting it and everything is fine.

I have not had to do this up until about 2 months ago.  I have had the router for about 3-4 years.  Is it time for a new one or is there something else going on here?

I have not changed internet service nor have any new neighbors moved in near me so I don't think there could be interference.  It's just weird that it will work just fine for a couple of weeks and then all of a sudden it just slows way down.  It's not gradual either.  One day it's fine and the next it's not, but it is about like clock work around the 2 week time frame.

Any help would be appreciated!

What Hardware version is your router?
What Firmware version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
