Ver 1.21 securespot causes latency and packet loss
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:24:11 PM »

Just trying to get a feel of those users that are using 1.21 w/securespot. I have been pulling my hair out (and beating up on comcast) trying to find out why my VOIP calls drop out for 10 seconds or so and my surfing times out from time to time.

Using pingplotter pro, I noticed I was having all kinds of issues with packet loss and high latency every few minutes or so.  I had comcast come out and make sure all the signals and connections were correct and I am seeing a nice +10 downstream with a 36 SNR and a +45 upstream.  Nothing in the modem error logs that appear to be giving any indications.

Just on a whim I decided to revert back from 1.21 to 1.11 and so far (Crossing fingers) it appears that the router is behaving better and not slowing down any pings. I do see some blips here and there on certain routes but thats to be expected.  I am not seeing the high 2 or 3 second ping times and packet losses.

I may try 1.21 w/o securespot just to see if its only the one version.  I have another comcast tech coming out in the morning and hopefully he can verify if there are any line or CMTS issues.

If anyone has seen the same with 1.21 versus 1.11 I would like to hear back so I know if its just me or are others seeing the same issue...

Thanks,

*chuckle*

This was a selling point when working with Comcast. All the more reason to get Comcast home phone.

I havn't had problems with my dlink, though i'm in canada.

Look out for bandwidth hogs on your network. VOIP needs very low latency. Enable QOS, WISH. Try manually setting your voip client in the QOS giving it a priority of 25.

For websurfing delays, try using OpenDNS. Comcast DNS servers are really bad.

Yep I found the issue in the same firmware, the problem is the SPAM filters with the securespot firmware.

Go into parental control for ALL devices and disable the SPAM filter, this solved the problem with my VOIP dropout calls problem and the stutter with terrible lag every few minutes with online gaming...

Hopefully that will resolve the issue.

Well, comcast came out today and ran a new line to the house just as a precaution.  I still have my doubts but will watch it under 1.11 and then perhaps over the weekend I will try going to 1.21 w/o securespot.  From there I may try the 1.21 securespot code again but this time turn off the spam server.

Pingplotter was a great help watching to see when it came up.  Since I changed back to 1.11 I still see a few straglers of high latency and packet loses but just chalk those up to the rest of the network doing its thing,

Now that you mention the spam server, I did notice the router connecting to it alot throughout the day, but I am surprised that the spam server would care about voip packets unless there's a proxy in there thats causing it.
