TCP keep-alive adjustments on the 4500 can it do it?
« on: December 15, 2011, 02:34:26 AM »

So far I am not liking the DGL4500 I have had it 3 weeks  and it don't hold a candle to Dlinks 4300  I set the 4500 the Exact same way as the 4300 besides the Obvious Lack of RIP (dynamic routing) which  I think was the magic setting that kept my DGL4300 so stable.

Problem is  Idle ports close even if you open them so I***ame i play sends no traffic for a set amount of time  the 4500 in all it's non logical glory will close the port since it thinks it is not being used with RIP the ports would be refreshed all the time, since I don't have that anymore  I need to find the setting that Adjust the  TCP and UDP keep alive timers and I don't see any.

basicly junk blank packets to keep the connection up, I tried  WAN ping respond even though that sets me up for Ddos attacks or somthing like that  Don't seem to help keep my connection up.

this also means my Xbox 360 gets kicked when it idles on xbox live, even though it says I have an OPEN NAT for the Xbox and I am golden connection I cant get anymore open.

Thinking about shipping it back to amazon and buying another used  DGL 4300 until dlink makes a router that good again or maybe trying  a ASUS  RT-N56U black diamond is looking pretty good  at this point because the DGL4500 is driving me nuts, I thought it would rock as much as the DGL4300 did, its not.

The asus black dimond specs look ridiculous ( 128 MB RAM 500mhz cpu for a router.) and I hear it's pretty stable and Asus motherboards/DVD drives/android tablets have rocked me hard for years

OH and they shipped me one with the 1.23NA installed on it So I can go back to any other Firmware to try thanks Dlink..  and the screen was scratched  up and the screen cover kinda pops out even though I bought it new from amazon in a sealed plastic wrapped box.   I will never get to try the amazing 1.15 firmware I guess since I cant go back.

(tip  3m command strips for picture frames Are Awsome for wall mounting your routers with out drilling holes or buying a real mount. the velcro ones are the best you can take it off and stick it back on they hold like 9 pounds)

I have my router set up to the XBL sticky with no issues with XBL, always open Nat on two Xbox's and I never get kicked even when I sit idle.

I suggest you take a look at the sticky at set up XBL ports per the instructions.

Many other users have no problems using the 4500. I'm currently running Kargo's A2 running v1.16. Works great. I have a A2 that  runs v1.21 that came shipped.

Have you thought about problems upstream from the router? Common problems can be attributed to ISP services, HW and cable lines.

Might have someone help review your router settings using Teamviewer.com

Its the router  If i plug the PCs or xboxes/ps3 in directly to the modem by cat6 eithernet cables  i can stay connected for over 12 hours before I stopped the test I am sure it would have stayed connected for weeks liked it used too but I don't have the time to sit and watch them idle connected.

Also everything is exaclty the same as it was with the DGL4300 that ran that way for 5 years the only thing that is changed is the DGL4500  and I took Screen shot pictures of all the DGL4300 settings in case of  major failure I could just look at it and restore the settings by hand in case i forgot I remembered most of them anyway.

as soon as i plug them or connect with the dgl4500 the problems come right back and I am disconnected like clock work around the same times.

It's most annoying on xbox live or steam since I want to stay connected to get invites and It will disconnect in single player games since it is not sending traffic in single player unless something happens like I get a message.

And since I connected with good cables  that rules out the  wireless being the problem,  it something they did to the DGL 4500 firmware and i see no setting to adjust it or set it like the DGL  4300 was at.

Anyway I think I am going to send it back and pick up  a used DGL 4300 the  802.11N connection was not that great anyway and did not perform much better than the 11G stuff in fact most of my N stuff connected at the exact same speed as the G.

I hope dlink just puts out the DGL 4300 again but with a  dualband wireless 11N in the box  the DGL4500 is no where near as good as the 4300 was and the lack of LED lights bothers me because they used the wrong type of Screen that cant stay on anyway and it does not make a good replacement for LED lights.

This router reminds me of the 2 Crappy linksys routers the old blue ones I used to have that did the exact same thing the DGL 4300 stopped that.

OH and i looked at the sticky and took it even farther than that I tried just about ever combination of setting possible  don't work.

I even tried stupid stuff I knew most likey would not work like lowering the Gigbit eithernet wan port down to the same speed as the modem plugged into rather than leaving it on Auto.

IT only works if I through the Xbox IP out in the DMZ and I only get one of those settings and I got  a Ps3 PCs android devices  DS 3ds psp ETC and wii to connect too.

What ISP Service do you have? DSL or Cable?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

And what is the make and model of this DSL modem?
Is it in bridged mode by chance?
Are you using the PPPoE setting on the 4500 or just DHCP? There is a ALWAYS ON opton under PPPoE that needs to be enabled if you use this option.
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

BTW your 4.5 hours away from me.  ::)
You could send me the 4500 and let me test it out if your interested.  :-\

they use a  PPPoE ISP Protocol and its LLC Bridged  they give me actiontec m1000 everytime they update the speed in my area they send men one of those so I got 2 of them . they are the same except for the firmware that supports the speed there settings are the same and the hardware might be the same I have no idea since you cant check it on the modem.

I set it up to treat the routers like it is plugged into a PC directly  I disabled all its other security junk except for NAT since it is required for it to connect to the ISP and I opened the ports on that NAT and the DGL4500.

the DGL 4500 does the security,  and I tried turning the DGL4500 WEP and firewall off and got the same disconnects. ethernet does not even use wep anyway so was not expecting it to do anything.,

it detects the 4500  by  UPnP  and even shows it's name given in the list and it shows up on all my other  UPnP stuff and killing  UPnP is not an option for me since I use Media boxes and NAS syonolgy diskstations that need it. I would guess there is some back and forth talking by  UPnP in doing auto setting adjustments for ports but i set them my self anyway since the auto settings by  UPnP don't work 99% of the time.

Are you getting a 192.168 address under Status/Device Info/Wan section or a ##.##.###.### address?

It sounds like the actiontec isn't keeping a good signal to the 4500.
You need to verify that you can put the DSL modem into full on bridged mode, thus handing off a Public IP address, ##.##.###.### to the 4500. Use the 4500's connection type under Basic/Internet/Manual and set it to PPPoE and input the DSL account name and PW. Check to make sure that ALWAYS on is enabled.

Power off the DSL Modem and 4500, power ON the DSL modem first and let it sync, then power on the 4500. Check the Status/Device Info/Wan section on the 4500 and you should see a ##.##.###.### address. This is a preferred method of using this router.

I'm not impressed with Actiontec modems.  :-\

One more thing, if the actiontec can't be fully bridged, one other work around possible, if the Actiontec has a DMZ, put the 4500's IP address it gets from the modem into the modems DMZ. This will bypass any modem management and pass everything to the 4500. Then you would use DHCP as a connection type on the 4500 instead of PPPoE.

the action tech m1000 "ATM Encapsulation setting only gives me 2 choices LLC Bridged or LLC Routed.   I don't see any other setting for bridge modes.  and I cant pick them when the modem is in PPPoe they are grayed out. and the other setting is already in LLC Bridge.

and it has to use Dynamic IP-DHCP to function from the isp ppoe wan to LAN the isp don't support the other settings I tried it wont even connect to the ISP unless it it is on static ip not supported.

the DGL 4500 is treating the modem as the WAN gateway and then it handles the LAN.

ya I can't remember the settings we used up here for my buddies DSL when I loaned him my 4500. He had the same modem. We called up Qwest at the time and he had us bridge the modem. However I can't remember if we use DHCP or PPPoE on the 4500. He has since moved on. And being that CenturyLink has taken over, I presume that they have change some of the protocols.

Does the Modem have a DMZ by chance?

One thing you can do, see if CenturyLink supports users having there own Modem HW and get your self a better DSL modem. I had my buddy in OK get a Dlink and it works great with his 4500. Just really feel this is a modem/operation link. Just need to find the right thing to make it work. The 4500 IS a great router. There are just some odd ball ISP issues that make most ANY router, not just the 4500, have quirky issues with modems. SLC has cox cable right? Ever though about going to cable Internet as an option? Just curious.

I ended up returning it for a refund  and Bought  2 almost brand new   DGL4300 off ebay for the same price as the DGL4500.

Don't know what I will do with the second one maybe just keep it as a backup in storage or use it as a wired smart switch.

I will wait for the next great router  Tech upgrade Im not too thrilled with what Dlink has been doing with these "high end" OLED models   maybe dlink will do it more awsome  nexttime make a real dgl4300 model Update with wifi .11N I don't want to deal with the trouble I got better stuff to be doing.

I was hoping the DGL 4500 would be it, cant figure out why it don't support stuff like RIP still or other stuff they did with it there is no reason really.

the 802.11n was connecting at the same speeds as my wireless G stuff anyway 54 Mbit saw almost no improvmentsand it was not as reliable either.  5ghz mode was useless since stuff I want to use did not support 5ghz mode anyway and most of my stuff only has G support anyway.

and I use all my PC on  GIGbit eithernet anyway to transfer huge files and G is fast enough to do everything else it don't help internet speed anyway since G is way faster than most peoples internet connections.

SO I am in no big rush to upgrade to 802.11n, G works almost as good  with the DGL 4500 anyway.

im just going to recycle my old broken DGL4300  and copy the config file to the ones I Got off ebay simple and quick and move on.
