The main purpose for our just purchased DNS-323 is to make it Raid1, with some JBOD for FTP, so that we can use it to back up our 4-5 computers on the network. We will be backing up smaller files, pictures, Outlook pst files, documents, Quickbooks files and similar.

I am thinking of just buying Norton Ghost, which is at about 70$. Also in consideration is Genie Backup manager. I would like to hear some ideas of what do you think is a good program for doing that

The 323 doesn't do hybrid raid types so you have to pick either RAID-1 or JBOD.

Next, I'd recommend Acronis True Image Home instead of Ghost.  Ghost is nothing like what it used to be; Acronis is great, detects every storage media you throw at it -- even if you boot from the recovery CD.

Correct it does not do both however he could specify a raid 1 volume smaller than his smallest drive and generate extra Standard Volumes and use them for ftp etc.

I believe both of the above responses are incorrect.

As far as I'm aware - it is not possible to have a RAID 1 array and any extra "standard volumes" - if you create a RAID array that does not utilise all the available disk space, whatever is left is used to create a JBOD volume.

I would suggest you reconsider using a RAID1 & JBOD configuration - should either disk fail, you will lose the contents of the JBOD volume, which you may have expected since it's not redundant - but - when you replace the failed disk, the unit will only rebuild the RAID1 volume, and remaining space becomes inaccessible unless you reformat both disks.

So Ghost is not that good? What about Genie Backup Manager 8? I use this for backing up emails from computers, but I dont know if its any good for full disk backups. Ill check out acronis as well

Why not? I always prefer simpler setups.

i did this, and man, what trouble!!! I tried to redo the Raid1 and, first it said format failed. Then it rebooted and tried to format the second drive. After it froze after the reformat, I had to unplug it and now its syncing the drives, and it will need another 60 minutes. The drives are empty, what do I need a resync for...

Good catch. Hadn't reformatted to a partial raid in a bit and forgot the secondary outcome. It is infact a JBOD of the remaining space.

I'm using Perfect Image by Avanquest.
The autosave daemon that runs on my xp machine slows down hibernate or standby mode, but it's continuously connected to my dns.  Whenever a file changes or a new file is added or deleted, it'll update the dns.  I have it set to full backup and it does incremental backups after that.  I actually lost a content to one file and I opened up the autosave daeomon and it allows me to select one of the last five versions of the file I want to restore.  You can configure the # of versions it will save.

Bad thing is that Perfect Image is licensed to one computer, although honestly I didn't install it on two to see what happens.
