Hello!! I'm getting low transfer speeds (8 MB/s) between my DIR 655 and my new Synology DS212J. I'm using the Intel NAS Performance Toolkit to measure throughput. I've tried several things with no luck including: setting the LAN connection to gigabit only instead of auto, different Jumbo Frames rate in the NAS, and setting on & off Short GI, WMM and Multicast Streams. The NAS also has a fixed IP. I'm connected wireless at about 216 Mbps+ with a DWA-160 adapter.

Does anyone have any experience with the DIR 655 and other Synology NAS models? What setting combination works best? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Most routers impact NAS performance since there LAN ports are on the same device and the router is having to do many things while online. We've found that installing an external Gb network switch between the 655 and the other devices helps to resolve the performance impact while still providing connectivity to the internet.

Thanks Furry.. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't understand how a switch will help in a wireless connection. I would agree with you that a switch will be beneficial if I were connected to the router via lan. Since I'm doing wireless, when transferring files a would still need to go thru the router to connect to the NAS (router to switch to NAS).

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES

At most you'll only see about 9-15Mbs on WiFi. Just the way it is...too many variables for WiFi.

Also, a quick test you can do, why not go wired from your pc to the router and the test your xfer speeds to the Synology. Just for you your knowledge. How do the speeds differ? Should offer better performance. Again we understand that your needs are wireless.

Please let us  know the results of both wireless and wired.

I have to second FurryNutz question, "why not go wired"?  If you are using your NAS for HD streaming video, a wireless connection will most likely cause the stream to choke. I presume you are streaming video because you enabled jumbo frames. BTW - did you try using a wired connection between your NAS and DIR-655? If so, what kind of throughput were you getting?

I changed the settings to N only and I got 8MB/s. Connected wired at 100Mbps I got 14MB/s. My laptops don't have gigabit network adapters.

I would like to get over 12MB/s doing wireless.

Well unfortunately getting anything over wireless is hard to achieve since the wireless standards and many wireless variables impede any achieving of speeds over wireless of 15 and up. Even while using 5Ghz on other model routers with my MacBook Pro only results in about 10-15Mps. Just the nature of the beast.

If your looking for speed and performance, the best thing for NAS is wired and using Mb or Gb wired connections. I usually see anywhere from 40-60Mps between my PC and my server. Again we are bound by the support and design of the ALL hardware involved and the standards they are designed under. General preference for using most NAS devices is wired connections. Even though wireless is pretty good, I would prefer to use a wired connection when using NAS and trusting a wired connection when xfering files and streaming rather than WiFi where it's susceptible to some interferences when wired isn't.

In your case your reach the maximum limits of the hardware you have between the router and PC.

I think you are right. Maybe is time to buy a new desktop with a gigabit network adapter and leave my old laptops for internet only.

Sometimes you gotta just update the hardware too. I did. It's not too spendy to upgrade the network cables and such. If you don't have a Gb PC then, might be a bit more of course. One you do, you'll see the differences. If you do get into something new, I would recommend a external Gb switch to use with the 655 and the NAS.

Your numbers fall within the range of normalcy.  12MB is really pushing the ceiling, the most I've personally achieved through wireless is ~9MB although I've read of others hitting 10MB. I have two D-Link NAS (not Synology), but in principal the results should be similar.

Your perceived throughput will be a bit lower if you are using RAID 1 & 5 since there's extra overhead (i.e. parity / mirroring)

As FurryNutz suggested, a GB switch isn't a bad idea. If your NAS is primarily transferring data between only one other device on your network, you can sit a GB switch behind the router to establish a direct GB connection between those two devices to maximize transfer speeds by bypassing the router altogether. Other devices that access your NAS less frequently can go either wireless (through the router) or though the wired switch (through the router).

8 MB is a pretty good throughput for wireless. There are innumerable factors known to potentially influence data throughput, such as: RAID configuration; NAS chip set; HDD spin rate; NAS hibernation settings; client NIC card; network configuration (server, client, router).  And although you are averaging 8MB, your throughput may take intermittent dips due to network traffic and other variables -- which may cause buffer under-runs for streaming media and timeouts for large file transfers.

Your best (and most reliable) course of action is to stick with a wired connection if possible.

Precisely. I've found that the client-side (i.e. PC) network settings, OS, NIC, and virus/firewall settings are the most likely culprits causing poor throughput.

I just got my new desktop and did a couple upgrades to the network  . I added a motorola SB6121 modem, a dlink switch DGS-1005G, and changed all cables to cat6. I have enabled jumbo frames on my desktop and matched the rate with the nas.

The desktop and nas are connected to the switch. All other clients are connected wireless (n band).

I did a couple of trials transferring files (2GB single file and a folder with multiple file sizes) between the desktop and the nas (copy/paste and drag/drop) and I'm getting between 30-40 MB/s. I couldn't use the intel nas performance tool because apparently is not compatible with 64bits.

Does this level of data transfer speed looks reasonable?


On other note, I have to admit that the Synology DS212J is a nice upgrade from my previous DNS-321. It has very nice applications built-in like audiostation, photostation, mediaserver, wordpress, filestation, vpn, in addition all other standard features on similar devices. Ohh well that's another topic..
