disconnects at same time each day
« on: February 26, 2009, 05:16:54 PM »

For the past three days, we have lost our internet connection during the dinner hour. The connection does not come back up til I reboot the DIR 655. At this time of day 2 PC's are on, plus a WD World Book NAS. I'll set some things up to run, when I come back they have all failed because the connection failed. The computers are Win XP SP3. Is there a utility I can run which might trace the activity so I can troubleshoot?

Today's router log showed it was polling the timeserver at the time it disconnected. Yesterday's log showed TCP packets blocked, but there was no active connection. The day before that showed it was polling the timeserver at the time it disconnected.

I also don't appreciate the way you can no longer login to the router when it's offline, like I could with my old Dlink. At least then I could see if I had an inappropriate IP address, instead of waiting to see what will happen next. Don't dummy down!

OK, there it goes again. 7:53PM, couldn't even finish this post and it went offline again. OK, I tried changing my timeserver from pool.ntp.org to us.pool.ntp.org.

Please check if it is your router disconnecting from internet OR your modem. Could be essential to find out....

Per what I see on the logs, it isn't either. I already tested both my Nic card and my wifi card, and they both passed, as usual. Haven't found any apps that might cause the problem either.

try disabling the time server all together and see what happens. I would almost have assumed you had rules set in place fer the router to die during dinner so the kids have no choice but to eat.

Oh, that's real funny, and would be a great thing to do if I still had any kids at home!

Actually, when I got this router, I had automatically used pool.ntp.org for the time server, since that is what I had been using in my old Dlink. Then when this started I checked the ntp.org site, and they had us.pool.ntp.org listed for the US. So I updated the time server setting to the new one, and so far it hasn't spit up, yet.

Pool just searches for then accepts a random server out of 521 possibilities in the USA.

You may get better results by using a specific time server for your state that has open access.

Scroll down to the ones that start with US then has the state abbreviation.

Examples:
US CA - California
US CO - Colorado

As the load on the hosts supporting NTP primary (stratum 1) time service is heavy and always increasing, clients should avoid using the primary servers whenever possible. In most cases the accuracy of the NTP secondary (stratum 2) servers is only slightly degraded relative to the primary servers and, as a group, the secondary servers may be just as reliable.  :D

Nice copy/paste from the Rules Of Engagement;)

The info is really dependent on your location.
For example, I use time-nw.nist.gov which is run by Microsoft and has plenty of load capability.

Yep, was a good text, needed no moderation.  ;)

Location is not an issue, just sheer server load prevention.
It's the myth of the Stratum One servers being more on time than other Strato 2 servers.
Because of this people will flood the Stratum 1 servers when there is absolutely no reason to do so.
